Score 7. The meat would look better if: A) It was trimmed and the rough ends removed. B) It was placed square into the box following the lines of the box. C) less chunky sauce was painted onto the meat. D) The top edge of the meat was more uniform. This brisket appears to haave been cut from different briskets.

7 Some potential but too much meat. Hey, generous is great but focus on even, uniform cuts, sizes. Maybe taste and texture is great but who knows? Wish I were there.

Even though pieces are a little uneven I would give it an 8, possibly a 9 in person.

7. Not a fan of the heavy saucing.

Score 9 The number of pieces, besides giving the volunteers and table captains a taste, tells me that the cook is confident that all of his brisket is good and allows the judges to select any of the various pieces. Rarely does a cook add to the number of pieces to just get rid of it because he doesn't want to take it home.

6 - Another dark photo; making it hard to judge for appearance. Box looks like it was casually put together, with way too much meat. It would have been a better presentation if less slices were put in the box (especially that first piece), and not at an angle. The sauce looks like it was hastily applied. I feel if you are going to use sauce, make sure you cover all exposed meat evenly.

The sauce on this brisket is uneven and makes it look very unappetizing to me. I'd give this box a 7.

7 - Goobers and pickers everywhere, the torn piece twards the bottom, and brush marks on bottom piece just make it look as though the extra effort was not there.

7 - 8 -- The brisket looks fabulous: moist, good color, nice bark/smoke ring. However, the two front pieces look like they were thrown in as an afterthought, and the third piece from the front has something hanging that should have been trimmed off. A little more effort and this box would have been a solid 9!

6, maybe 7 at most. Pieces appear moist but have been placed carelessly and haphazardly in box, creating an unbalanced awkwardness. Please take great care placing those slices so they create a uniformity. What are the gobs of stuff on several of the slices? What is that loose "tail" on the left end of the 3rd slice from front? Although not part of the meat itself, the careless sauce smears on left side and left-back wall of box don't help.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only. The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE. In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example). Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner. Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad. Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-) Archives by Month
