7 - I didn't like the overall appearance, in particular I didn't like the the first slice layiing on the rim of the box. If you're going to lay the slices diagonally, there's nothing wrong with adjusting the length of each slice to accommodate the shape of the box. The burnt ends would be displayed better if both groups were similarly displayed. As it is, the back burnet ends show nothing but bark, while the front burnt ends appear to have been simply dumped into the corner.

Score 8 It looks under cooked. I could be wrong and texture and taste might pull it out.

Bad arrnagement. Slices would be better layed out straight from top to bottom, Burnt ends look different on each side. Meat looks moist. Ragged piece on top left of front slice should have been trimmed.....7

a 7. Slices are uniform in color and size. Nice arrangement and look moist but top slice is jagged at left and overhangs edge of box so really does not add to potential score as it is one of 8. Burnt ends at the top are not placed like those at the bottom of the box.

Good looking sample. The cook has crowded the box a little too much but otherwise the brisket looks inviting. I would overlook the crowding and give it a 9.

7 - Overall, the meat just does not look that appetizing. It may be the picture, but meat looks very pale in color. Even the bark of the slices is not really noticable.

Suggestion: I have seen presentations for brisket done on the diagnal like this, but this one just doens't work. the slices are too short, and the cuts are bit sloppy in places.

Lighting makes the meat look pale. From the photo the box gets a 7. In person it may be higher.

8 - Not sure why what looks like the worst slice of brisket is in front, but the meat looks like it could be tasty!

May be the photo, but the brisket looks slightly washed out and somewhat dry. Still decent looking meat tho, and the table captain will thank you for the extra sample.

Score 9. Not a great picture, but great looking brisket. I would hope that they are as tasty and tender as it appears.

8, burnt ends kinda jumbled, slices are not aligned but could have been mis-handled?

Score: 8 - Nice looking slices, uniform in placement, one too many slices for the box, burnt ends look tastey but are not uniformly placed.

Slices not placed very well, too big for diagonal placement.
Trim your brisket to fit box before cook. Not a good look to square up after cooking. Burnt ends need alot more time to be true BE's.
I think a 7 is a generous score.

Garnish is too skimpy, does not create a frame for your entry.

    Purpose

    The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

    The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

    In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

    Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

    Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
