9 I like this one, tender, moist look, limited debth of focus is a problem, someone needs to work on their camera skills.

Score 8. I do not care for the color of the sauce that has been "painted" on this brisket and therefore have deducted a point.

From this angle, that's a 9 for appearance every day and twice on Sunday (if it's a double contest). Can't tell the width of each cut from this shot; hopefully they're not too thin. I just feel sorry for volunteer table for not getting any leftovers.

Score 7 trimmed nicely and presented in the box nicely. It doesn't look like it would tear apart easily and only the minimum pieces.

Like the bark and burnt ends. Lightly sauced. Only negative is the brush marks on the slices. ....9

Nice box,8

8 - The burnt ends are very nice. The slices could be arranged more tidily.

Score: 8 - Nice arrangement in the box, good looking bark, the color of the meat seems artificially masked by sauce, slices and burnt ends appear evenly cut. Nice box.

A 9! Nice color, spacing and layout. Look moist. Yummy.

Good looking brisket. Hope it tasted as good! Score it a 9

8 - Interesting placement in the box! There are two three places on the right at the top that should have been trimmed that caught my eye immediately. Small deduction consideration, but this is competition BBQ.

9 - Great looking box. Be careful with the garrnsh covering the meat upper left....

Wow! Original and gorgeous, 9 all the way

Nice looking brisket box. I'd give it a 9. Some might complain about their only being 6 slices. More slices would make the box fuller and it would probably look better. That would probably get you better scores from those that complain about there only being 6 slices.

Not much wrong here, just need mo meat.
Strong 8, 9 with full box.

8. Maybe higher in person. The slices appeared very thin. Meat did not quite pop for me.

Perfect 9

8 - Not a great quality photo, but does look like good brisket entry. I am hoping that the slices are not as thin as they appear in photo.
As an aside - wish more teams woulkd include a 7th piece for the table captain.

The burnt ends don't look real, just look like chunks of meat but will give the team the benefit of doubt.
I would prefer unsauced brisket but this looks really good. Seems to be a thin layer of fat on top with a nice charred rub. I would like to taste this stuff

Are we judging strictly on presentation, because it's very hard to speculate on how it would tear apart or what it might taste like. For presentation, I would give it a 9 for KCBS and 10 for FBA. This box is interestingly assembled in spite of the photographic imperfection.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
