Another bad picture. If you'd flip the box around you could get a better look at the meat. Slices and ends look good but color is questionable. In person I'd probably score this an 8, possibly higher.

score=7 box upside down and poor presentation, too dark, unappetizing

6 Picture quality is too poor to properly judge. Slices are uneven and not evenly placed in box.

9 Nice full box. I defenitely like the way the slices are cut.

6. May be higher in person. Looks very dark. Please take the picture from the judges' perspective.

8 looks fine other than being photographed upside down. if that red color is sauce it looks kind of strange. i would liked to have had a better view of the first piece next to the burnt ends.

Score 8: Photo should have been taken so we can see the meat and not just the edges; looks moist, but has a very artificial red color (image quality?)

6 - It would be better is the box was rotated 180 degrees so the picture was take from the front thus showing the meat better. The meat looks pretty red, either very rare or a color color was added. The ends look over done. This presentation does not entice me.

Holy creamation. Charred burnt ends. The top ends of the slices are over done. May be over sauced.........6

I would give this a 7. Meat looks burnt. May taste otherwise though.

7 Uncertain about this one, slices appear uneven thickness, coloring inconsistent.

appears to have way to much sauce. The dark pieces im assuming is supposed to be burnt ends and that isn't it.

7 - Picture is to dark to be sure, ends look too dark, flat looks over sauced.

6 - It's difficult to evaluate this box properly because the camera's point of view is not the judges' point of view. In effect, we are being asked to judge this box by looking over its shoulder. Doing so requires the judge to mentally rotate the image to imagine what it might look like from the front. Maybe we get it right, then again, maybe not. The slices look nice but rather haphazardly placed to me. I suspect this box would score higher at the judging table. Maybe even as much as an 8.

Hard to see the meat with the photo from the back of the box. From the photo I'd give it a 7 maybe an 8. If I could see from the front the score would probably be higher. Can't really judge what we can't see.

6. The burnt ends look charred. Placement of the slices makes it difficult to judge. I can't really see the meat well and it looks very heavily sauced. The slices do look moist and are evenly sized and placed.

This one's an 8 in my book, the burnt ends are a little literal looking burnt and only a taste should dictate a flavor & tenderness. But at first glance, I'd lean towards a little blacker burnt than necessary and the box is judged as a whole.

8 - Maybe a 9 in person. I think its the picture that makes the burnt ends look a little on the overcooked side. I'd make sure and arrange the slices evenly, but other than that, great book. Makes me hungry!

7-8 Another bad picture (maybe it's my computer) but it looks good as far as I can tell. However, the color of the meat appears to be sauce-related and, as such, you can't tell what the meat looks like except for the burnt ends! More care to placement could be taken as well.

The red color for brisket just does not look natural to me. That and the appearance of too much sauce. Score 7 Comments are closed.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only. SUGGESTIONS: Feel free to offer any suggestions on how to improve the box (keep separate from reasons why you scored the box). You can mention anything here such as garnish suggestions. Purpose
The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE. In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example). Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner. Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad. Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-) Archives by Month
