KCBS Judges - Please treat the foil as garnish and ignore it. Thanks! -- BBQ Critic

7 Meat looks good, but not evenly placed in box and slices not uniform.

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ
1/19/2013 10:44:01 pm

Score: 7 - Meat color is good but too much sauce over all, placement okay (didn't take off for first slice as it looks like it was bumped during transit) but slices could be more uniformly placed, burnt ends look okay, chunks could have been arranged better with less sauce.

8 looks good other than unevenly applied sauce.

Slices look good just way to much sauce would roally go 7.5 to 8 if taste was there

6 - TOO much sauce on flat, point is unappealing.

The meat looks appetizing, however, the sauce detracts from the overall look. An AuJous would have made this presentation better, instead of BBQ sauce. 7

Too much sauce and uneven sauce. The slices of brisket are not lined up evenly with a big gap between the first slice and the rest of the slices. I'd give this box a 7.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Much more care needed in laying out slices, very sloppy use of sauce. Your BE's are to be honored for not just being squares of beef.
I honestly cannot call this "above average" so a score of 6 is my choice.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS

score=7 sloppy haphazard presentation

Larry MCBJ

6 - Oversauced, goobers everywhere, and haphazard arrangement .

John B. KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MABA Judge

7 - box appears hastily assembled, slices are not evenly matched and some are askew...and not from mis-handling. Sauce sloppily applied. BE's appear to have simply been dumped into the box.

7 No appeal to this, sloppy arrangement, uneven sauce, looks overdone.

Lorrne Rae
1/20/2013 03:34:27 am

A DISQUALIFICATION because of use of foil as garnish. Jumbled arrangement and isolated slice would have lowered score to about a 5 had correct garnish been used.

7. Maybe a 6. in person. Slices looks nicely cooked but I can't clearly see the meat at the bottom - probably burnt ends - due to the underexposed picture. Slices appear coated with a splotchy heavy coat of gravy.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 8. The brisket is very appealing, but the box is not organized. Spend more time to assemble your box and this would be a nine.

ignoring the foil - numerous problems with this box, but the meat looks very appetizing to me! slices not lined-up, too much "trash" on the slices, BEs not arranged in the box, sauce/au jus not evenly spread on slices, etc.

Kendall - CBJ
1/20/2013 12:59:51 pm

Not a very good application of the sauce, I'd give it a 7.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS
1/20/2013 01:11:49 pm

Nice slices and ends but everything was just thrown in the box. Also gobby sauce.....7

Pat (Santa) Austin

KCBS CBJ, MIM, MBN - 9. Good looking, even slices. (Not all are lined up evenly, but the one slice out of place could have shifted while bringing the box to the TIT, or in handling after it was turned in. Nice burnt ends.

Score 7: Spend a little more time arranging box; too much sauce that is uneven on meat

Overall sloppy box. Slices out of line. Over sauced. Nice bark. Maybe a better score if you could see the meat....................6

Matt KCBS CBJ

6 - Average. Some suggestions I have are to trim the burnt ends to uniform shape and size, align the slices in the box, and don't lay down one of the slices - makes the box look sloppy and hurried.

Dwain

6 - looks like good brisket but the box was not put together well. Seems unkept.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ
1/21/2013 08:15:36 am

7. Look like a sloppy job putting it in the box. Color is very dark and that makes it look un-appitizing.

Karen, KCBS judge

5. This is an average box. The saucing is uneven and the pieces were not arranged evenly.

All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
