The slices look dry and im not very sure about the burnt ends
score 7

I'm going to ignore the off-color and just judge the meat in this case. Slices and burnt ends are uniform in size and they don't have too much sauce. Presentation is very good. Score this brisket a 9!

9 nice looking box of brisket. Can't tell what the color difference is on the lower portion of the first piece. If it is pooling of the finishing sauce (on the meat) I would lower it to an 8 but I always give the benefit of the doubt to the cook.

seven--the color and layout is distracting, too many square corners

Score = 9: I can't see any major obvious flaws on this brisket box.

Suggestions: The chunks have some dry spots. If you are going to sauce or otherwise moisten the meat, make sure it is all uniform.

9.....Slices look moist. Evenly cut. Nice bark and color on the Burnt ends. Not overly sauced.

Back slices could be spaced a little better but thats nit picking.

9 I like it, very nice. Especially good because I'm seeing meat and not alot of other stuff (greens and sauce).

Again, damn the shadow. This could be a 9 but the lower left is to dark to judge.

9 - The BE's may look oversauced but overall, this is a great box.

Nice symmetry, slices laid out pretty even. Square ends have a nice shine. Only diss is slices look kinda dry and anemic.
A very good effort, 8.

Score: 8
Color is slightly flat. Might have just been the lack of moisture on the slices tho. Chunks look pretty nice and tasty.

Looks very good to me, doesn't have they WOW factor to be excellent.
BEs don't look like BEs (too light in color).
Slices look a wee bit dry.

8 - Very Good - Meat looks a little grey, but I wouldn't turn it away.

Full box, burnt ends look good to me. Very little sauce = confidence in meat - nice work.

Score = 8 Nice looking burnt ends & uniform slices.

Suggestions: Would like to see the slices look a little moister.

9 - Very nice looking box.

9 overall, the box looks visually good and appetizing. The bark cubes look good.

Suggest - the alignment of the meat needs to be spaced with a little more care. The pieces of meat are not evenly spaced . The bottom (those to the right) are closer than the top (left).

Clean arrangement of the meat, presented about as good as it could be. I tend to like bark slightly darker, but this is still very appetizing.

Pleasing to the eye. One note, I'm missing the third piece in upper left. Loses some symetry.

Dwain -- CBJ/KCBS

SCORE/REASONS: 9 -- Excellent. Everything is dress right dress, uniform, and consistent.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Wipe the spot of sauce off the top right corner of that box!

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
