CBJ - good color, nice glisten, attractive arrangement. I like this box, I would score it a 9. You might get some critical comments if you like them, use them. If you don't ignore them and keep doing what you are going

8 - rotate the box 90 degrees and it is a 9.

8. Nice layout, even color and sizes. Look moist, however, right hand slice lower and out of line with other slices.

9. May be an 8 in person. Color is a bit off in the photo. The burnt ends look a little heavy on the sauce. Could be the picture.

picture is dark, but overall looks pretty good 8

8 - nice box, but what are those white specks on the burnt ends. Was it windey & ask got into the box...but since there's not any on the slices it's difficult to know what happened. Maybe it's the Photo,

Neat, orderly, good color, looks moist. Square ends look very appetizing.
I think it's excellent and should receive a 9.

Appearance Score: 9
Great looking box. The slice look great, uniform in size and layout. The Burnt Ends look good, but I would have a bit more random in their placement. I little less uniformity in the BE, size and placement, would have made a more interesting box. But hard to improve on a 9.

9, very nice arrangement, even space, burnt ends all the same, great job here.

score 8- pieces on the right side towards the bottom, should be cut square, not at an angle.

9. Love the arrangement. Everything looks great. Evenly spaced, nice color of the meat and it all fits. AWESOME!

6 - Burn't ends don't look burn't.. Slices look pale and uneven. Might be the photo.

8 - Nice attempt at symmetry, but meat looks a little dry.

Uniformed placed contents. I think I would have included more cubes so each judge could have the option for at least 2 bites. Brisket look moist and not overly sauced and slices the cut looks uniform and even across the pieces. Nice color, pleasing to the eye.

7 - The meat arrangement is nice but the slices should be aligned better (the slice on the left is not aligned very well). The meat also looks a little dry.

Score 8. Burnt Ends could be spaced so they come out to edge of brisket slices. Meat is a little dark, but good smoke ring and moist looking. Need to taste??

8 Tough one to call but the slices appear too thick, possibly overdone.

Score = 9: I like this presentation for brisket. Color looks a little washed out, but I'm thinking that is from the photo not the meat.

the combination of slices and burnt end in a uniform area is great. The meat looks moist and pleasant to the eyes

Looks excellent - NOT perfect, but excellent.
I like the way you can see more than only one slice face. Looks moist and appetizing to me.

9. No complaints here. I'm not a huge fan of square trimmed brisket it just looks a bit to much like spam to me but I won't drop on score on a personal prejudice. The burnt ends look like the kind of candy you could eat till you get a tummy ache! Real nice work

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
