Format to follow for judging:

SCORE/REASONS: Here you type your score and reasons for your score

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Here you can bring up items that did not affect your score, but will help the cook improve his or her box and any other comments that did not affect your score.

Thanks for following this format, judges! :-)

Score 7. This brisket has little appeal. It looks dry and washed out, only the rear slice has any appeal. I would bet that as this box is passed for taste and tenderness the first judge would take the rear slice.

8 is a little high but the colorong could just be bad lifhting. color kind of flat except the back Alice, it has shine and looks glazed while others do not. Slices have some build up of rub that is just caked up on some of the slices

Brisket looks good although perhaps it is the lighting but the back piece looks different than the rest. I'd give it an 8.

Brisket looks juicy and slices are even....9

8 looks pretty good but picture may be poorly lit. top piece looks odd and may be over sauced. better lighting and this box might be a 9 for me.

SCORE/REASONS: 8, meat looks great. No burnt ends

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: add more cuts of pork.

7 - This box has a hastily assembled appearance about it. From front-to-back, the 4, 5, 6 & 7th slices appear to have meat particals stuck to slice faces; the 8th slice appears heavily sauced, but no other slices are sauced at all.

Also, although it didn't affect my score, based on the top-line profiles of the slices, I would guess that maybe 3 different briskets were used to make up this box; slices 1 2, 4, & 6 from one brisket; slices 3 & 8 from a 2nd brisket and slices 5 & 7 from a 3rd. It's legal, of course, but it makes for an irregular appearance, thus a lower appearance score.

8 could use some sauce, but nicely trimmed pieces

Mike Cannon

7 - looks artificial - too square - too wet.

7. Overexposed picture makes this one difficult to judge. Clean up the bits in the glaze for a better appearance score.

Suggestion: Neaten up the arrangement of the slices for a better score from some judges.

7 Difficult to judge from this photo and light. Color seems off, some variation in slices, sizes, etc.

score=7
meat looks tasty but not a good presentation

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Wow, nice thick brisky flat! Slices are not arranged very evenly.
You need to clean the goobers off the slices, ruins the look.
Box is on the verge of being a little light looking.
Above average 7 here.

Nice box

Score = 8. Last slice in the box has sauce all over it while the others do not.

Looks moist and natural. I'd give it an 8.

slices are too dissimilar and oriented strange.
What's up with the top slice and its gloss compared to the others?
Truncated slice ends appears strange also.

Score/Reasons: 8/Nice looking but a little gray in color and looks possibly dry.

Eggspert, KCBS, CBJ

Score: 7
Comments: Trim the ends more proportional to the box. Your box looks like you are showcasing the green instead of brisket. Brisket is expensive and takes a long time to cook, don't cut all the ends off! Also looks a little dry and I can see your electric knife marks. Also the smear of seasoning on the face of the first slice is messy.

Score 8 I would remove the pieces of bark fromthe face of the brisket

PaulG KCBS/CBJ

7- That is what I would call an average box. There is nothing that stands out.

On a positive looks moist however, meat not centered in the box, parsley uneven, uneven spacing of meat.

7....Good color and bark.

Slices cut to short. Shine on the back slice appears to be sauced different than the others. A little more care in lining up the slices.

comment -- I wish that top piece looked the same as the others.

8 This is one on those that looks good, but off just enough to not make the top. Meat appears dense and maybe a little tough.

7 - The meat appears to be dry. Also, the placement of the strips of meat is not evenly spaced. It may be the pic, but the top slice looks as if it was glazed or something while the remaining sliced look as if they had noting done.

Suggestion - make sure the slices are spaced evenly and the sauce in applied evenly.

score / reason 8 looks a little dry

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
