Score 8
This box is confusing. It lookes liked chunked brisket, but they aren't really burnt ends. Maybe the brisket didn't turn out as expected and the cook turned in what he/she could.

5 - need to have some slices. not well organized. looks fatty and gristly.

Score/Reasons: 9; meat appears quite juicy and moist

Suggestions/Comments: the entry might be just a little sparse, but what is there looks good

9...Nice color. Meat looks moist.

More bark would look better along with more meat in the box.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8. Chunks are even in size and look tasty....however box looks empty and that distracts from the meat.

Lorne Rae

8. nice cubes, even color, look moist. However, they appear to have been placed haphazardly.

David - CMBJ/KCBS
12/17/2013 01:49:36 am

Score - 7. The color of the sample pieces is not very good or consistent and the random placement takes away from the appeal and overall look

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
12/17/2013 01:57:41 am

Score 8. The only reason I can offer for this score is it was a shock to see a box of only ends. I do not recall ever seeing this presentation with brisket. The meat appears great and I can only wonder why the cook made this decision.

Tiffany - KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 7, the meat looks pale although moist cook seems somewhat inconsistent

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
12/17/2013 02:18:22 am

Score = 8, Color makes it look a little bland. Also looks a little greasy.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
12/17/2013 03:32:42 am

Score/Reasons = 8, Burnt ends are a favorite of many. These appear to be cubed pieces of the point. Judged as presented, the fat looks nicely rendered with a light amount of saucing and I am anxious to get a taste of this.

Suggestions/Comments = The problem with this presentation is that some judges are going to mark down for the presentation, I did not. It's all about the meat to me and whether it some something I want a piece of right now.

George
12/17/2013 03:57:22 am

8 - I suspect that some judges will rate this box down because it lacks slices. That's wrong. We should judge what is in the box and not what isn't. I gave it an 8 because the arrangement of the burnt ends is somewhat haphazard; however, they look like excellent burnt ends.

Larry MCBJ
12/17/2013 04:07:28 am

6 - No wow factor. Just chunks thrown into box and garnish covers some product.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ
12/17/2013 04:48:38 am

9 - Looks moist. Great color. Excellent entry.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
12/17/2013 07:10:20 am

Score/Reasons: 7 - The pieces, themselves, look moist, attractive, and not oversauced. But, they appear simply to have been dumped into the box...and they look lost in there. While it didn't affect my score, if the intent was to present a box of burnt ends, this box appears to me to fall short and contain only cubes of brisket.

Suggestions/Comments: If you're going to present only meat cubes, make a lot of them and try to fill up the box as much as possible. A full box always makes a better presentation.

8 looks good but offering seems sparce. add a little more volume to build up the presentation a little.

joe

9 - What is not to like? The biggest decision is which two to take. I really like this one, nice color, nice moisture.

Moonpie

8... good but no "Wow I want to eat that"

comments: personally I like the cubes... not every will. And some are going to score down due to the mixed garnish even if it is subliminal... It's a risk. If it were me, I'd mention to the Reps the night before or the morning of the contest that my presentation was not going to be the expected norm and ask if they will remind the judges to be open minded about a different presentation.

Greg

5, the color looks bad, the meat does not look like "I want to eat a piece of that". I always wondered about a box with all burnt ends, if they are good, nothing wrong with that. This box just don't look right to me

Shawn-KCBS CBJ and Comp cook
12/17/2013 09:50:38 am

I would score this box an 8. It looks as if the fat May have needed some more time to break down.
Suggestion: make the box a full of meat and put some slices in if available.

Bobby Whitefield
12/17/2013 12:07:31 pm

I want slices! This box looks like nothing more than left overs. While attractive greenery, I would not score it higher than a 5 or 6.

Steve R - KCBS & BBQ Brethren CBJ

A slightly different style entry but the meat looks great. Enough pieces for the judges to take 2 if they want to and some for the TC as well. Not smothered in sauce either. Well deserved 9.
(Next time maybe a touch less garnish)

bruce nickels
12/17/2013 11:14:09 pm

5-does not look good at all. Gray meat. Needs more sauce, where are the slices. Fat lines show that the meat could have cooked more.

Score/Reasons = 8, placement of the cubes should be more uniform, there is a cube on the lower right that is just sticking from the rest. Also, cut the meat so the cubes would be more consistent in size. I like the different look of the cubes instead of the normal slices.

Suggestions/Comments = take a little more time in placing the cubes in the box and to ensure the cubes are of equal size.

7 - The cubes look moist and appealing, however the presentation could have been enhanced by adding slices from the flat.

DJ Martin
12/19/2013 10:28:12 pm

Score/Reasons = 8 Not all that pretty but looks moist and appetizing non the less.

Matt KCBS CBJ
12/20/2013 04:33:08 am

Score/Reasons = 9, burnt ends look juicy and nicely cooked

Suggestions/Comments = I was really on the fence between and 8 and a 9 on this one. If going with an all burnt ends box, I would make sure to place them a littler more neatly in the box, and cover all the green spaces in between with meat. Otherwise, it looks to sparse. But, it got a 9 from me because I am judging the meat only.

Seaton Hall - KCBS

9. I suppose I could complain about the lettuce, but this is a meat contest. Nice job.

Jim Perry
12/21/2013 06:38:34 am

8 - Nice color. Looks good.

Bold move going with all chunks. Many will think you did not cook the flat properly.

Score/Reasons = 9, looks moist and delicious!!!

Suggestions/Comments = better arrangement would make the box look better (but we are judging the meat NOT the box)

8 I just want to grab one of those morsel of beef. The box possibly could have been fuller.

Michael KCBS MCBJ CTC
12/24/2013 03:39:16 am

8 - looks moist, spend a little more time in arranging the burnt ends, looks like just dumped in.

Jeff KCBS CBJ
12/25/2013 06:52:41 am

score/reason 7 is this burnt ends or pot roast??? color looks off, randomly tossed in the box no wow factor

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
12/26/2013 10:34:49 pm

Score: 8 Burnt ends should be a bit more burnt.

Comment: APPLAUSE for turning in a box like this! Outstanding idea. If there were a bit more bark I woulda dropped a 9. As they are they look juicy and delicious just not the definition of a burnt end to me.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
