7 - Burnt ends look dry. Front slice has a piece of fat that distracts and the slice could be more evenly placed in the box.

9 nice box

7 - looks very dry. some minimal garnish would be good.

7 at best. Looks dry and over cooked. No bark. Burnt spots.

Score/Reasons: 8; Meat appears just a tad dry, but still a nice entry.

Score = 8. Nice arrangement of the meat and box looks full even without garnish. However, the brisket looks dry.
12/17/2013 01:32:34 am
7. Good layout, even color, nice bark. However, the slices look dry and they do not line up evenly along each side.
David - CMBJ-KCBS

Score - 7 The color on the brisket is very uneven and the brisket looks very dry
12/17/2013 01:51:08 am
Score 8. I would suggest that the cook reconsider the layout of the box. I would like to see the slices and not more ends that were placed in front of the slices. With seven slices the cook could have easily placed one more in the back of the box and not hidden the sliced brisket. 7slices with 10 ends ?????

Score/Reasons = 6, this meat looks dry - so dry just looking at it dried my mouth. Not something I'd look forward to tasting.

Score = 6: Color is uneven and not very appetizing. Meat looks dry as well.

12/17/2013 03:40:00 am
Score/Reasons = 7, I'm waivering between a 7 and an 8 as the picture makes the meat appear a bit dry and the bark looks unevenly cooked. That said, there is some sheen to some of the pieces so it may be the picture. It's a nice, full box which is needed if you have no garnish.
12/17/2013 03:59:28 am
8 - Here again some judges might rate this down due to the lack of garnish. That is also wrong. I gave it an 8 because the meat looks dry.
12/17/2013 04:10:36 am
7 - No wow factor. Looks dry and overcooked.
12/17/2013 04:45:44 am
7- Nice box of brisket. Fairly even cut. All pieces have a dry appearance.

Score/Reasons: 6 - This box of brisket appears dry, dull and boring. If I were a judge AND allowed to "pass" on judging a box, I'd pass on this one. Unfortunately, maybe my score of 6, which is deemed to be "average," may be too generous.
12/17/2013 07:32:04 am
7 - It appears dry, I do not see any hint of moisture. The color is all over, looks like grill marks on some of it and the ends of the slices.
12/17/2013 07:43:35 am
12/17/2013 08:59:54 am
6... Looks dry.

5, looks like dried up brisket to me

12/17/2013 09:53:31 am
I would score this box a 6. Meat looks very dry, color is not appealing, and pieces are not cut very uniform.
12/17/2013 12:10:04 pm
Slices exceed the width required by KCBS or IBCA. Meat look overvooked and dry. Not inviting. I give it a 3.
Steve R - KCBS & BBQ Brethren CBJ

Meat looks good but somewhat dry. Enough pieces for all.
12/17/2013 11:15:14 pm
7-meat looks dry and over-cooked. Needs some sauce

12/18/2013 02:28:54 am
Score/Reasons = 7, the crust looks good but the rest of the meat looks very dry, The ends could be more equal in size.
12/18/2013 06:29:57 pm
6 - meat looks overcooked and dry which subtracts from the appearance
12/19/2013 10:24:45 pm
Score/Reasons = 6 Appears very dry.
Matt KCBS CBJ
12/20/2013 04:35:11 am
Score/Reasons = 7, just slightly above average to me. The beef looks overcooked and dry. But, the box is full and I like the symmetrical idea of the presentation (burnt ends at top and bottom of box)
Seaton Hall - KCBS

7. Pieces are discolored and appear to be dry.
Tom - CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook

Score/Reasons = 7, looks dry and dull, no "wow" factor

4 -5 box looks sparse, no greenery; the meat doesn't pop out at you, meat looks very dry, there is no color on the meat like a typical comp brisket.
Jeff KCBS CBJ
12/25/2013 07:05:59 am
score/reason 7 color looks a little off, meat looks very dry , burnt ends could be a little more uniform in size

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.
In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).
Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.
Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
