Score 9. Overlooking the sauce dotted around the box and also the fact that the brisket should have been centered on the garnish, this is a great looking entry.

score 8
The box looks pretty nice except for the 1st piece which is under all of the rest. Not overly sauced, and no burnt ends

strong 8, looks great

9 perfect looking box to me

8 - having a product look as good as these slices, it seems there would be more attention given to detail. Placement, symmetry and the cleanliness of the box is crucial. Had these been considered, this box would have been scored 9.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 9. Nice looking meat.

Suggestions/Comments: Perhaps center the meat top to bottom in the box.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

8- Entry looks moist and juicy. Not sure where that front piece in the box is supposed to be. Otherwise great looking box.

Suggestion: Spend a little more time on arrangement of the product.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 9.

Good looking box of brisket. The first slice seems a little awkward but otherwise meat looks moist and evenly sliced.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
12/29/2013 10:22:35 am

Score = 9

Comments: I almost gave this an 8 because the brisket isn't centered in the box, but that brisket looks so great.

Kev B

Score: 9

Very nice looking box.

Suggestion: 1) I am not sure if its camera angle or not but the first piece looks like its sitting on top of another piece. I would angle the first piece more so you would not see it but like I said, it could be angle of the box making it show more.
2) Also edges on left side of box looks little dirty. Quick wipe and it would be perfect.
3) Could use some more garnish on left and right side.

Score/Reasons: 8 - Good looking brisket, appears juicy. Right ends of all slices appears rather raggedy and distracts from appearance.

Suggestions/Comments: Tidy-up the right edges of the slices and you'll get a 9 from me.

Larry MCBJ

8 - Remove goobers and the front piece looks folded.

Tiffany - CBJ, CTC

Score/Reasons = 9 - great color, looks moist

DJ Martin

Score/Reasons = 9 I want to eat this whole box!

Chaz D KCBS CBJ

Score: 8

Comment: The meat looks awesome but its not centered in the box and the underlaying layer showing in the front like that is visually off-putting. Think about adding a piece or two to balance the box and hide the support layer of meat.

An 8. Neat attractive box with good color and even slices. Just the right amount of sauce. A few minor smudges but still overall, nice presentation,

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9. Nice looking meat with good bark.

Suggestions/Comments = A little more symmetry would be good - some judges will marh down for placement in the box.

Score/Reasons = 9, I like the look of the box and meat.

Suggestions/Comments = The suggestion I have would be to ensure the slices are lined up better. The fifth slice shows more of the meat than the other slices.

Score/Reasons = 9, great color, very nice meat slicing/placement, juicy looking, mouth watering appeal, superb

Suggestions/Comments = recommend not placing slices in two layers as it makes it look like some slices have slipped down and might effect appearance.

8... Tried to give it a 9 but came up short. Nice looking brisket. Looks juicy with a nice bark. Sloppy presentation. The bottom part of the front slice is distracting.

Balance the box by spreading out the slices. Clean the sauce off the box. Liked the smoke ring.

I would score this box a 9. Looks super yummy!
Suggestion: try to center the meat in the box.

CBJ - 7 I try and score my boxes in 30 seconds. Pluses- meat looks very juicy. The contrast between bark and meat look pretty good. Minuses- Looks like not much effort put in placing meat in the box. The group is off center, the piece on the bottom caught my eye and the right edges are ragged. The meat looks good, the execution is lacking

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
