Score: 7

Suggestion: It appears the meat is over sauced and cut to thick. Also I think the box has to much meat in there.

Comment: With this much meat, I think you either need more garnish on the sides or no garnish at all. As it is right now, the meat is drowning the garnish.

9 nice box

7 cropped edges don't do it for me, a little heavy on the aujus and it looks very pot roasty.

Score 8. This box is just too overloaded to be appealing. It certainly is not necessary to place this much meat into the box. If the best slices only would be used I believe it would make the box more attractive and also would score higher. Bigger is better is not always true.

Too bad the box got jussled during the turn in. The peices aren't evenly cut,but they do appeat very shiny. Unfortunately no burnt ends

Score/Reasons: 8. Too crowded in the box.

Suggestions/Comments: Perhaps place fewer pieces in the box.

9- Product appears moist and appealing. Great box of brisket. Looking forward to a taste!

Score = 9.

Brisket looks like it would melt in your mouth!

Suggestion: Even though the table captains will love you, be careful to not over-crowd the box.

Score = 9, nice looking brisket box even from the top.

Comment: Sauce is almost a little too much. This is a meat contest not a sauce contest.

Score/Reasons: 9 - This is a nice looking box...not perfect but very nice.

Suggestions/Comments: Becareful to remove (or hide) those loose little stringlets of meat at the ends & edges of the meat slices. Many judges will take off a point for that. I almost did, too, but the rest of the meat looked so good, I gave the benefit of the doubt to the cook.

8 - Too crowded in front to see product..

Tiffany - CBJ, CTC

Score/Reasons = 8, looks moist - something about the sauce stops me from giving it a 9.

DJ Martin

Score/Reasons = 9 Don't usually care for sauce added after the cook but this was not overdone. Looks tasty.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ

Score: 9

Comment: Good looking box. You might consider dropping a piece or two so the box isn't so crowded that you end up with sauce smeared on the box. Some judges will count off for that but I appreciate the extra meat for the folks working the event.

8 The box may be too full. The slices in the front need to be seperated like the rest of the box to make the box consistent.

Bobby Whitefield

Good color. Nice smoke ring. Sauced perfectly. Slices may exceed width requirement, but overall an attractive box. A solid 8.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 8. A darker bark would mahe this more appealing, otherwise looks tasty.

Suggestions/Comments = Lots of meat in this box. Would neaten up the spacing on the slices as some judges will mark down for uneven placement.

Score/Reasons = 8, There is too much glaze which make the meat look too slimy. Also, the first several slices of meat appear to me standing upright while the rest are at an angle. This could be due to the picture, however, the slices are not spaced evenly.

Suggestions/Comments = Use less glaze and make sure the slices are evenly spaced.

Score/Reasons = 8, top edges look moist, but can't truly tell about the faces of the slices. Looks very good, but lacks that POP or WOW factor.

Suggestions/Comments = show more of the face of the slices so that we can see the meat better

8 - Looks a little too pale in color or the sauce is effecting the color too much to go with a 9. Nice looking slices, good presentation.

9...Looks moist. Nice color. Even cut slices.

Box over loaded. Clean up sauce on the box. If you are going to use garnish make it work for you.

Score: I would score this box a 9. Meat looks moist and delicious!
Suggestions: try to sneak some burnt ends into the box if available.

CBJ - 6 I try and select my score in the first 30 secs just like in a contest. Pluses- Nothing exciting about presentation. The cut of the slices is even and sauce level seems even. Minuses- pieces are not stacked in box evenly. It looks like a hurry up job. Not much bark on slices. The color is too light.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
