8 would be a solid 9 had the front slice not been there

7 - Don't understand the small and unevenly cut slice in the front. Also looks somewhat dry.

Lorne Rae
12/29/2013 01:55:31 am

8. Would have been a 9 if front slice was removed as it is not uniform with balance of box. Nice color, good placement and look moist.

Michael Cannon

8 - looks good but I would like to see more meat and less greenery.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
12/29/2013 02:28:41 am

Score 8. This is a good looking entry. The only reason I deducted the point is due to the front slice being so much different from the balance of the slices. I would suggest that the cook leave out the seventh slice if it varies this much from the other slices. that one slice is distracting to this entry.

Score 8
The pieces are not sauced at all. The 1st peice is not evenly cut and the 3rd from the back has bark missing.

8 samples look good except for short slice prominently in front. keep sizes the same.

9 - nice presentation however the smaller piece up front should have not been included, it takes away from the value.

9- Great looking box of brisket. Appears moist and ready to eat!

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 9.

Even though the slices aren't even and the brisket looks like it may fall apart I still like the looks of this box. Would love to sample it!

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9 Great looking box except for the first slice towards the right hand side. It looks very out of place in this box, but not enough that I would mark it down.

Score: 7

Suggestions: The meat looks to dry. Little bit moisture and I would have bumped it up to 8.

Comment: Garnish looks fresh but is uneven. The left side needs more to balance everything out.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

Score/Reasons: 7 - I like the diagonal layout of the meat slices. Nice bark, but the meat looks dry and quite uninteresting. The gaps in the bark on several slices markedly distracts from the appearance. The first slice should not have been included in the box.

Suggestions/Comments: Fix the "reasons" stated above. Spritz the meat to give it some "pop."

Larry MCBJ
12/29/2013 04:03:52 pm

8 - Bark missing from 3rd slice and bottom slice should have been omitted for irregular shape.

Tiffany - CBJ, CTC
12/29/2013 09:53:50 pm

Score/Reasons = 9, I could nit pick something, but essentially, I really want to taste it - and that is a 9 to me.

Suggestions/Comments = The consistency in slice thickness and length may affect some judges (although it shouldn't).

DJ Martin

Score/Reasons = 9 Just the way is should look.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
12/29/2013 11:39:07 pm

Score: 8

Comment: That little partial piece in the front was a mistake. I would have omitted it if I didn't have a full piece that looked good to put there. but the meat itself looks really really good. If it weren't for the runt of the litter in the front it woulda been an easy 9 box.

Derussi

8 The slice in the front does not match the others. The end looks like it was hacked. Overall, the meat looks good.

Bobby Whitefield
12/30/2013 04:18:27 am

Pieces arranged diagonally show meat was not trimmed before cooking. That is a plus in my book. Meat appears to be done and is presented nicely with just the right amount of sauce. An easy 9.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
12/30/2013 04:45:03 am

Score/Reasons = 9. Nicely cooked brisket.

Suggestions/Comments = The small slice in front detracts from the presentation. Some bark is missing in places.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
12/30/2013 05:49:10 am

Score/Reasons = 7, The first slice is considerably smaller that the rest of the slices. Also, the slices are not spaced evenly. The meat appears to be dry.

Suggestions/Comments = Make sure all slices are the same size and that they are all cut the same. Space the slices evenly and use some au jus (not the canned or bouillon type) which will moisten up the meat.

12/30/2013 06:27:10 am

Score/Reasons = 8, looks fairly moist, but not quite excellent - no POP or WOW factor

Suggestions/Comments = front slice makes box look strange by being shorter than others

Dennis M

Score 9
Suggestion > Since you had seven slices and only need six I would have left out the bottom one. It appears to be so much smaller than the rest. I think it would be dryer than the rest and your scores could be lower if a judge chose it as a sample.

8 Good looking box, but appears dry.

9 - Nice presentation, nice color, nice moisture. Consider putting a better slice as the front piece, this one is a wedge cut to nothing. With seven slices I am OK, if 6; this is one's sample.

9......Nice color. Meat looks moist. Even cut slices Good bark. Not over sauced.

Great smoke ring. Front slice looks like it doesn't belong.

I would score this box an 8. Meat looks very good.
Suggestion: if it does not look uniform don't put it in the box.

CBJ- Score 7. The front smaller slice seems out of place. The meat visually appears on the dry side.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
