8 nice looking point

Score 9
The box is filled to the brim. The peices appear to be evenly cut and the bark on the outside looks delicious. Unfortunately there are no burnt ends.

I would score this box an 8. Meat looks very good!
Suggestion: fill the box with meat and less green.

Ike, KCBS CBJ
1/14/2014 11:51:11 am

Score = 9.

Nice layout! Brisket looks to be tender and juicy and lacks the "gravy sheen".

Lorne Rae
1/14/2014 11:57:35 am

7. Nice placement and arrangement but with so many slices they are not evenly spaced.

8 looks dry. add a glaze to moisten appearance.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
1/14/2014 01:11:56 pm

Score/Reasons: 7 - Too much meat in the box, poorly trimmed, presented and looking way too dry.

Suggestions/Comments: Remove the back 1/3 of slices. Trim up the remaining slices to tidy up the loose threads of meat, the orphan knobbies on the left end of the slices and moisten the meat.

Not sure why the cook submitted so many pieces in the box, but I give him (her) credit for it. Meat looks very appealing also. Scored an 8

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
1/14/2014 03:04:27 pm

Score 7. This score is based on a extremely poor picture and could score better with a better picture. I also would suggest that the cook use slices that are more uniform as it is not necessary to overload the box especially when using slices that vary so much. No WOW factor with this entry especially with this picture.

Tiffany - KCBS CBJ, CTC
1/14/2014 10:35:56 pm

8 - Could just be the picture, but it looks a bit dry - that stopped the 9.

DJ Martin
1/14/2014 10:44:46 pm

Score/Reasons = 8 Nice full box but looks a little dry.

GeorgeB - KCBS CBJ
1/14/2014 11:00:02 pm

Score/Reasons = 7, meat looks dry. Slices are not evenly spaced and aligned.

Suggestions = A spritz or light brushing with drippings or sauce would make the meat more appetizing. I like the abundance of meat in the box. Watch the height of lettuce along the edges of the box to prevent it from hiding the meat.

Tom – CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook
1/14/2014 11:07:16 pm

Score/Reasons = 9, looks a bit dry, but that is probably just the angle of the photo, otherwise looks great!

Suggestions/Comments = can't think of anything!

I give this box a 8. Lettuce is a little out of control, but he meat looks good. I would like to pick it up and try it.

9 - Excellent, it is a very nice presentation. I am ready for a slice right now!

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
1/15/2014 12:27:57 am

Score/Reasons = 8, overall, the box looks pretty good. The only slight problem is the uneven spacing of the slices.

Suggestions/Comments = just make sure the tops of the slices are placed in the box evenly spaced.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
1/15/2014 01:47:41 am

Score/Reasons = 7. Picture is a bit out of focus. Meat appears nicely cooked, but a bit dry.

Suggestions/Comments = You will likely get better scores on taste and tenderness if you include fewer slices from one section of the brisket. It looks like you have pieces from the middle to the end - this will give you problems with consistent scores. Neaten up the presentation and try to eliminate the meat crumbs.

7 No zing - or appeal for appearance judging.

Entrant overloaded box. Use of only the first few slices, a little
sauce and garnish arrangement would help tremendously.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ
1/15/2014 02:02:54 am

8- Nice box of brisket. Pieces have a dry appearance.

Suggestion : Brush with sauce/juice, will make it appear more moist

Larry MCBJ
1/15/2014 02:05:11 am

Bad picture= no score. However, I see lots of goobers and figure the last, small piece is overcooked and dry...

BlueSmoke KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK

7....Meat looks dry and mimic. To many slices.

Terrible garnish job. Meat buried in the lettuce. Slices laying the wrong way in the box. Front of slices should face the front not the side so the judges can get a better look.

Shawn Higgins
1/15/2014 02:52:27 am

Score = 9

Love the look. Pieces are uniform in color and presented very well. Unable to determine if the pieces are moist but it looks good.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
1/15/2014 04:31:34 am

Score = 8 maybe 9. Photo is kind of dark and hard to get a good look at the brisket. Looks a little dry from the photo.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC
1/15/2014 06:00:43 am

SCORE/REASONS: 8. Looks a little dry, probably because of the photo angel.

SUGGESTIONS: Perhaps fewer slices in the box and make the slices more uniform in size.

Jeff KCBS CBJ
1/15/2014 09:41:41 am

score / reason 9 looks good maybe give it a spritz to make it look moist before closing the lid

7 dry looking. Nice full box

Garnish is uneven, looks thrown in the box.

I would give this an 8 for appearance. The color is good but the slices are not uniform.

Doug KCBS CBJ/TC Cook
1/21/2014 11:20:09 am

8, I liked the display but, it needed to be cleaned up on the left side and it looks a little dry

Matt KCBS CBJ
1/21/2014 12:34:25 pm

Score/Reasons = 5, maybe a 6 in person (blurriness doesn't help), beef looks dry and overcooked, but I like that you give the judges a very full box.

Suggestions/Comments = Just a suggestion - a nicely laid bed of parsley can help things look even nicer in the box. I don't see any reason to give the judges 15+ samples... take some home for tomorrow's dinner!

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
