BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score/Reasons: 8 - Slices have nice color, look moist, neatly placed in box. The BE's appear to have been simply dumped in a row.

Suggestion/Comments: Tidy up the BE presentation and you'll get a 9 from me.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
4/2/2014 04:20:10 pm

Score/Reasons = 9/Nice color, appealing and appetizing;

Comments = Take more time to ensure the placement is more symmetrical (e.g. the smaller pieces in front could be centered better).

9....Nice looking box. Good color. Evenly sliced. Nice and juicy Burnt ends look good.

Clean the box. Move the right side of the slices back so there's an even line across the front of the box.

Score/Reasons = 9, not perfect, but looks dad-gum to me! moist and appetizing!

Suggestions/Comments = try to frame all the meat with the garnish.
might look better with the BEs in the front.

Score/Reasons = 9. Nice looking brisket! Niceley trimmed, good bark, enough au jus to appear moist.

Suggestions/Comments = A couple of au jus spots on the side of the box should be removed. Sme judges may comment on the burnt ends not being perfectly arranged.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Outside a couple alinement problems and some slobbers on the side of the box, there is nothing here to keep it from being an excellent 9.

8. Nice color and arrangement. Look moist. Good knife skill. However, one of the pieces in the top row (third from right) is out of alignment.

Score/ Reasons 8, meat samples look moist , Do have issues with appearance , garnish and sample uniformity

Bobby Whitefield

Very nice box with good balance. Meat appears tender and well cooked. There are some minor distractions which will lower the score and for me, too much glaze or sauce. Still worth a 7.

Matt KCBS CBJ
4/7/2014 05:24:42 am

Score/Reasons = 9, nice and juicy, full box, looks good enough to eat!

Suggestions/Comments = I would take the time to neaten up the burnt ends, like stack them neater, but that is just my OCD.

Score/Reasons = 9, nice box, maybe make sure the slices are evenly spaced.

Suggestions/Comments = Maybe the spacing. Not much more to say, I like the box.

Jason CBJ CSBBQA

SCORE: 8 - Nice looking box! Points deducted for burnt ends looking over-sauced (could be the picture) and haphazardly placed. The slices look nice but not exactly uniform in size.

COMMENTS: I would have left the slice in the front out - the other 6 look to be all about the same size, then there is this smaller one right out front when it's not required. Makes me wonder how the meat behind there actually looks - dry?

9 I like the color not to much sauce, the pieces on top don't look burnt.

Score 9 I want to taste this entry.

cogeo
4/15/2014 08:01:01 pm

Score: 8 - maybe 9

Reason: There are small "chunks" (meat, spices, etc.) on the face of the brisket slices. Consider using a strainer to try to remove those "chunks" from the brisket juices.

With that said, this is a good looking box. I would look forward to sampling this entry!

This is what a brisket box should look like. I'm hungry just looking at it. It SCREAMS "take a bite".

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
