BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Burnt ends truely look burnt and not appetizing. 7

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 5. It's hard to believe that any cook would submit a box that looks this bad. The slices appear to be thick which would lead be to believe that it is dry and over cooked. My first look at the over burnt ends was that the cook put the charcoal in the box by mistake. Absolutely NO appeal to this entry what-so-ever. Pass me by on this box if possible.

I give this one a 9. Haven't seen that arrangment before. Would like to see some bark on the slices, and burnt ends look alittle big. But still a 9.

5 slices look ok

sorry, but the burnt ends really look like chunks of charcoal

Score = 5

Slices appear okay but the briquettes on the right just ruin everything.

7 slices look unusual, more like seared on a flat top rather than on a smoker. That did not affect my score, just a opinion of the appearance, meat looks dry and brunt ends look too Burnt!

6 - not appetizing at all

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

Score/Reasons: 6 - The slices appear rather pale and uninteresting. The 6 peices on the right look like charcoal briquettes...way too dark and burnt. Not good.

Suggestions/Comments: Fix the reasons.

Score/Reasons = 6-5/The slices look overdone and grey and the burnt ends appear truly burned and not appetizing at all. Not a good presentation.

8 - BE's are VERY dark and appear dry. Slices appear moist and have good color.

Score 7
The slices look ok but the burnt ends look really burnt. Dull looking with no shine to them. They also look dry. But they are evenly cut

7 - Slices look good, burnt ends look like pieces of charcoal. Should have left them out.

6.......Meat looks dry. Burnt ends look like charcoal.

Dip the slices in Au Jus before putting in the box or spritz. Leave the burnt ends out if they are going to lose points.

Score/Reasons = 7, slices look very dry, BEs look dry and tough, but this box still has appeal to me!

Suggestions/Comments = cut down on the size of the BEs a bit (not a scoring point, but would probably look better).

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 7: Slices look OK, but the burnt ends look.......well burnt. They look like sauce was put on them, they were returned to the smoker and sauce got burnt. Just doesn't look that appetizing to me.

6 - I really can't look past those 'burnt ends', the look like charcoal.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Yum/Yikes!
That's my first impression. Square chunks look kinda crispy, but they are presented well and will deal with the crispy critters during taste/tenderness soreing.
As is, I must award an excellent 9.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 6. Nice arrangement. Unfortumately there is such a huge difference between the appearance of the flat and the burnt ends it is off putting. There is little bark/color on the flat. The rough texture of the grain in the top half of each slice makes me think this may be a tough brisket. The burnt ends are very dark and are not appealing.

Suggestions/Comments = none

9!!!! Great original layout. Nice placement and pattern. Good color contrast. Even colored meat on each half of box, Looks moist.

Score/Reasons = 5, meat slices look decent but overcooked. The burnt ends are so bad they should not have been put in the box.

Suggestions/Comments =don't put charcoal brickets in box.

This appears to be two different briskets. One cooked on a pellet smoker which is under cooked with little smoke and the other cooked on a stick burner leaving the meat overdone and burnt. Not impressed with this box and would give it a 5.

Matt KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 7, box is full of meat, never thought I would say this but the burnt ends look too big and something is off about the slices.

Suggestions/Comments = How is there no smoke ring on the slices?

Score/Reasons = 7, The slices look pretty good but the burnt burnt ends take away from the whole box and the slices.

Suggestions/Comments = Don't include the burnt burnt ends. It would be better not to include them.

SCORE: 7 - Burnt ends look very burnt, to the point where they don't look appealing. Slices look decent enough.

COMMENTS: The big burnt ends are overpowering this box and smaller pieces would probably serve you better in this case.

Score 5 slices look dry and ends look burnt. This is a very unappetizing box.

Suggestion: leave out the burnt ends and spritz the slices.

I like the pieces on the left, but the burnt ends on the right are so dark and so dry (appearance) that to me this takes away from the overall appeal of the box; 7

Burnt ends too dark. Tighten up the " lines" of the meat. Meat appears better if slices are uniform and even. Same for the burnt ends straight lines of meat in the book appear better

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
