BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

7 - did not like the end pieces at all.

I would rate this a 9. I want to eat it now!

6. Look moist. Nice layout. Arrangement of cubes does not reflect a pattern. Bark cubes and therefore the different colors are randomly placed. Grain of meat is sometimes horizontal and sometimes vertical. The 5 slices (a DQ in some associations) appear to be of different widths and the ends are ragged.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = DQ Unless there's another slice hiding somewhere one judge isn't going to get a sample.

Otherwise the brisket looks good and moist and it's a full box.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

First off I only see 5 slices, there may well be 6 but I can't see it.
But in KCBS this would not be a DQ as there definatly are 6 servings of brisket, but judge #6 might get testy about not getting a slice. But again not a factor in appearence score.
No real "pop" here, nothing makes me want to push another judge out of the way to get at it.
It's a above average 7, but not by much.

8 sauce a bit gloppy and uneven color on burnt ends

I give this one a high 8, the meat looks moist, but just not real appealing.

9 - Great looking brisket box. Appears moist. One judge may get only B.E.'s - Hope they are as good as they look.

Score/Reasons: 8 - Nice looking box of brisket...even though there appear to be only 5 slices presented. The box is legal, but I deducted one point for the raggedy ends of the slices.

Suggestions/Comments: Tidy up the slce ends. Also, strongly suggest putting at least 6 of everything in the box. I looked and looked trying to find the 6th slice, but couldn't find it. I hope it's my screen resolution. Some judges may deduct for too few pieces of one of the formats..

6 - Fair entry. I am assuming that there are six slices in the box, even though I am counting only five. If there are indeed only five, then the score would have to be 1. The bark on the slices appears too light for my tastes. The third slice from the burnt ends could benefit from having the left end cleaned up. The slices and the burnt ends both look juicy, good job there. The burnt ends vary quite a bit in color. It was generous to include ten burnt ends but your arrangement could have benefited from less meast and a little more space.

Larry MCBJ

7 - Burnt ends different sizes and colors. Slices have goobers all over and ragged ends.

Suggestion: Looks like 5 slices. Not a deduction....

Vern - MCBJ KCBS
8/20/2014 08:45:39 am

9 - Nice job. Burnt ends could be cut more uniform and all should show bark.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 8. Meat looks good, but box is a bit crowded.

Suggestions/Comments = Strain out meat goobers before saucing. Should have six slices if you want all judges to consider them.

Score- 6 Doing the algebra on this box I only come up with 5 slices of brisket. That is not going to go over well with the judge at the end of table. Burnt ends are a little on the chunky side and very inconsistent.

GeorgeB

Score/Reasons = 6, lacking nice bark. Not appetizing color or look to the meat. Chunks are rather large and crammed in the box.

Suggestions/Comments = more pronounced bark on the meat would be more appetizing. Random arrangement of chunks showing sides and bark would be more appealing in my opinion.

nice filled box but only 6 count the slices

Enrico BBQness, CBJ KCBS

I could be the 6 th judge with a 5 slices turn in box.
If this happened to me I will score 1, 1, 1.
If not, then I will score 8 for 2 reasons:

I can't see any bark in slices, even though they look moist and even.
The burnt ends are not uniform in donedess

Score to be determined by the Table Captain and the Contest Rep
There are only 5 slices in the box, and 10 burnt ends. If each judge took a slice and 2 burnt ends, then that leaves judge #6 without anything to eat.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9, Color on the burnt ends looks uneven, but not enough to bring the score down.

Score/Reasons = 9, looks moist and pretty appetizing. Definitely not perfect, but doesn't have to be to be a 9.

Suggestions/Comments = not a scoring factor, but smaller BEs/chunks would probably look better, and get rid of the debris on the slices.

Achu

Score/Reasons = 7, burnt ends look greasy, the edges of the slices look uneven and the spices in sauce detract from the sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = don't pack in the burnt ends. If I can't see them in full, I can't judge them properly and see if they're smoked fully or half cooked and greasy. Consider trimming slices on both edges to even them out.

8...meat looks moist. Nice bark on the Burnt ends. The clunkers in the sauce takes away from the appearance. Ragged ends.

There appears to be 5 slices in the box. One judge will only get a Burnt end. Slices might be over cooked.

7- Box is full , But you have only 5 slices, judge #6 doesn't get one. You also have 10 huge chunks of meat at the top. Kind of over-powering for me.

Score/Reasons = 9, neat box. Meat place neatly.

Suggestions/Comments = The only suggestion is maybe make sure on the ends are the same color.

Score/Reasons = 7, Busy Box! 5 Slices? Poor cuts. Tiny bits in the sauce not appealing.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
