BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

7 - loved the slices - hated the ends.

I would rate this an 8

7. Nice layout and arrangement. Look moist. Top right cube should be switched with middle top left to present a balanced pattern in the box. Slices are of different lengths.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8

A little care could have been taken in making the slices more even-otherwise this is a good looking box of brisket.

Slices going two different ways and full of specs is not doing the looks any favors. They look nice and moist though. The square ends look delish, nice bark, hopefully full of flavor.
Me thinks a very good 8.

9 nice box
Line slices up a little better might sway a judge on the fence

I give this one a high 8, Looks kind of sloppy in the box. But meat looks like something I would want to eat.

9 - Excellent looking brisket box! Good color and appears moist.

Erle Smith, KCBS CBJ & CTC

7 - Good entry, The slices here look juicy and show an attractive variation of color from bark to interior. The slice farthest to the right, the presenting one, is longer than any of the others. Maybe either trimming it or selecting a slice closer to the size of the others would have helped. Unique arrangement to include the burnt ends in the corners. The burnt ends vary quite a bit in size, I would suggest trimming them to be more consistent. That said, if I were judge 1 I would reach for the largest.

Score/Reasons: 8 - Legal box. The meat looks ordinary & uninteresting.

Suggetions/Comments: Trim off the ends of the slices to give them a uniform appearance. If there's an odd-size BE, like the one in the center front, put it in the back. Put all similar/matching sized BE pieces in the front.

Larry MCBJ

9 - Nice box, great color, I want it!

Suggestion: Removing black spots from the slices will be worth the extra effort... just saying...

Vern - MCBJ KCBS
8/20/2014 08:48:22 am

8 - Burnt ends should be cut more uniform. Looks nice and moist. Too much char on some of the burnt ends.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9. Looks moist and appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = Try to neaten up the arrangement a bit, especially the slices. Strain out the meat goobers if that's coming from your glaze. Many judges will mark you down.

Pete KCBS

Score 8 - Looking good! Burnt ends in the front could have been cut a little better.

Score/Reasons = 9, meat looks moist and appealing. Nice bark on the chunks.
Suggestions/Comments = I scored it a 9 so not much to say. If we want to be nit-picky, I did find the single chunks on either side of the slices to be a bit distracting, but nothing offensive. Still rates a 9.

9.
I like this box. Slices are almost even and meat appears moist. Burnt ends look good w/ bark although not even cut.
I suggest to take more care in cubing burnt ends and cleaning the slices.

Score 9
Nice looking box. The peices are evenly cut and the presentation of the burnt ends looks nice enought to eat

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8, Length of the slices are uneven, first slice is much longer than the rest. The cuts on the burnt ends look ragged and size is uneven.

Score/Reasons = 8, looks a bit dry and too dissimilar to be a 9. Attention to details would help.

Suggestions/Comments = not a scoring factor, but arrangement is strange.

Achu

Score/Reasons = 8, very nice box, with a nice layout and good colors.

Suggestions/Comments = A nice layout, but two issues caught my eye in the few seconds of the judging process. The spacing between the slices could be evened up and the edges are ragged and should be trimmed. I think the problem is the space between slices 1 and 2 are excellent and then the balance is thrown off looking at the spaces between 3 and 4. Overall, I'm looking forward to a taste when I see a box like this.

9......Meat looks moist. Nice bark on the Burnt ends.

Slices could be better aligned. Front slice longer than the others,

9- Great box layout. Burnt ends look good.

Score/Reasons = 8, Even though there is a sheen on the slices, they still look slightly dry. The ends should be the same size and have the same color. Some here are dark and others are light.

Suggestions/Comments = Make sure to place ends in the box that are similar in color and of the same color.

7. Fat on bottom of slices is in appealing and slices look very light in color.

9 I like the look of the meat and the burnt ends.

Jim S. NEBS KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 7, I like the non-standard layout. However the unevenness of the cubes and slices are very distracting.

9 Nice looking brisket box. I can't find any reason to score this less
less than a nine for appearance.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
