BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score 8
Nice looking box but the slices appear to be an "off" color. I'm not sure if it's the picture. Should've put some glaze on the slices

Score/Reasons = 9, looks pretty moist and very symetrical - I definitely want to dive into this box.

Suggestions/Comments = the color of the slices is a bit bland, but didn't affect my score.

Appearance 9- Full box, even cuts, looks very appetizing, same size slices and ends.

9. Great entry. The color is a little light on the slices.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Well laid out box, nice clean orderly slices, could use a little sheen to them. Square ends look tasty.
Can't find a reason to not give it a excellent 9.

Score 9. This is a nice looking entry, but I always wonder why the cook doesn't place the same amount of slices and ends in the box. I also would like to see a slight glaze on the slices. Neither of these deduct from the score, but are suggestions to consider.

Score = 9. Brisket slice look a slightly dry, but going to give benefit of the doubt and not score it down.

Score - 9

Not a fan of the squared ends, but that is me. Obvious care in the layout; nice box.

Score > 9

Hope the burnt ends have the same taste and tenderness as the slices. As I have stated before, I have seen the burnt ends hurt the overall taste and tenderness scores more often than help.

9 - Very nice presentation and attention to detail...

No deduction however, color seems a bit pale.

Score/Reasons = 8, The meat is just there, nothing making me want to eat the meat. Looks a bit dry

Suggestions/Comments = re-arrange the meat to give it a unique look, different from all others. Add a bit of au jus that came from the meat's cooking. Don't use the canned au jus. It gives the meat an bouillon taste.

Score/Reasons = 9, everything looks great. Color, moisture, texture, layout and slicing.

Suggestions/Comments = They say that brisket is the toughest meat to cook. You make it look easy. Burnt ends yell, "Eat me!"

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
