BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 - Nice looking box but the slices aren't uniform.

Score = 9

Brisket appears moist and has a nice color to it. Burnt ends have a good bark and not too much sauce has been applied.

Score/Reasons = 9, perfect

Suggestions/Comments = making me hungry. Very full looking box. Maybe too much color on burnt ends, hard to tell from image

8

Wayne KCBS/CBJ

Score = 8. Reasons: In the submitted photo, the box is rotated 90° from the normal viewing perspective, and the meat is arranged from corner-to-corner verses the more typical rear-to-front. For me this is not a big issue. Overall, the meat looks moist and the slices present well. The size, number and arrangement of the burnt ends look great, but they may be a tad dark, but I suspect they look better in person.

8-slices not uniform

Deb KCBS MCBJ, CTC
2/17/2015 12:49:24 am

Score/Reasons: 9, Brisket is very moist and appears nicely done.

Suggestions/Comments: This brisket looks wonderful-if it was in front of me, I'd definately want to dive right in! Nice burnt ends too.

Score= 8

Looks nice and moist and like the arrangement. Maybe clean up some of the specs on the burnt ends. Hope that's not a pice of foil between the middle burnt ends other wise nice box

9......Slices look moist. Nice bark on the Burnt Ends. Even cut slices.

Meat setting to low in the garnish. Line the slices up. Nice smoke ring-Not judged

Yummy, couple small comments, spend a little more time lining up your slices. Take the pic how it will be presented to the judge, as it is it looks pretty good but turned to the front, not so much.
Beautifull bark on the square ends.
For now a very good 8.

9 - The burnt ends may be a bit too burnt - but overall it looks great so I'll say a 9 here.

Score = 9 Meat looks moist, nice bark on it.

Photo is a little blurry, but I am giving benefit of the doubt on the score.

8 - Burnt ends should be cut more uniform and placed more evenly. Get rid of little bits.

Larry MCBJ

9 - Not exactly even but still a nice presentation. Looks moist, nice color, and I want some..

Jeff Thompson

Appearance Score is a 9. I really like this box. The diagonal layout of the slices with the pyramid of burnt ends is unique. The bark and the meat all look very moist and tempting to eat. The burnt ends could have been trimmed a little more evenly and a few seconds taken before closing the lid to remove the booger bits, but still a very good box.

Score - 8

Reason - Brisket has beautiful color but your knife work needs improvement, slices are uneven and burnt ends need to be more uniform in size

Suggestion/Comment - Remember if you are competing against other teams, it is the team that pays attention to detail and does the extras that wins

Score/Reasons: 8 - I like the color and I like the meat cubes/burnt ends. They're very inviting. I didn't score this a 9 because the box looks a bit jumbled and haphazard.

Suggestions/Comments: Tidy up those slices so that they look like clones of one another. Tidy up the display of the BE's as well.

Score/Reasons = 9, moist and excellent layout. Very inviting.

Suggestions/Comments = Don't change a thing and I hope to get a sample of this soon.

meat looks moist, good smoke ring, good bark, good color; amount of meat, size looks enticing; especially like slices and burnt ends; I would give this a 9.

Score: 9

Slices are somewhat hidden by the garnish, but I don't care. Slices look moist and the burnt ends look like it has nice bark. If you need a sampler...... :)

9 this box has it going on, looks moist, great color, great bark, presented well in box, garnish frames meat to make the meat the star, and all the judges get a sample. Well done!!

Score/Reasons = 9, like the look. It looks pretty moist I like the way the meat is presented, diagonally.

Suggestions/Comments = The only thing is make sure the meat is aligned better and evenly.

Pete KCBS

Looks pretty good to me. I like the diagonal arrangement and the meat looks delicious.

Score/Reasons = 8, meat looks moist and pretty good, but the stark blackness of the bark is a bit off-putting. Appears to be unevenly sliced.

Suggestions/Comments = take more time to evenly line-up the slices and the BEs. Don't hide the meat under the garnish. (NOT a scoring factor)

9 meat looks moist

7- meat very inconsistently sliced. Placement in box is not very even. Burt ends look like they were dumped in the box. Needs more structure.

Score 9 Great color, looks moist, nice bark. Very good box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
