BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score: 9

Attractive box, nice square cuts. Looks very appealing.

Picture is blurry though.

8 the meat looks good enough to eat. I think it would look better with the burnt ends in the front of the box.

Ira Trexler

I would give this an 8 .. I would like to see a bit more darker bark. Also the spacing at the top could be a bit more uniform. All in all its a good looking box and I would love to take a taste

Wayne KCBS/CBJ

Score/Reasons = 8. This is a FULL box! The meat appears to be moist and has a nice color. The arrangement of the slices is consistent and overall balanced within the box. The color from the juice/sauce is uneven preventing a score of 9. However, in person this very well might be scored up from my initial 8.

Comments - Placing the burnt ends in front might have made uneven color less noticeable not to mention showing off the burnt ends better. Sauce smudges on the lid or sides of the box are not a scoring consideration as the boxes can get bumped around between turn-in and viewing by the judges... however at the time of your photo it should lt should have been as close to perfect as you could have made it. A Q-tip would have cleaned up the sauce smudges easily.

Score 9 The slices appear moist and fairly evenly cut. There is just enough glaze on the pieces. The burnt ends look inviting

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score / reason very strong 8, the sauce spatters or drippings on the sides of the box are distracting for me suggestion close detail to a clean box will get you that 9

Score: 9

Again, waffling between 8 & 9. I am not a fan of cutting edges of the brisket so that it fits in the box. Also, remember to wipe the box down before closing and turning in. The brisket looks moist and flavorful, I would like to try this one.

Score/Reasons: 9 - Nicely presented box of very appealing brisket. Good color, looks moist; just let me dive in.

Suggestions/Comments: Fuzzy focus is distracting.

Score = 8

Nice arrangement and not too much sauce....however, the brisket looks like it could be over-done.

Score = 9, Nice looking brisket box.

Comment: The sauce/aus jus is a little uneven.

Score/Reasons = 8, looks moist, but color is strange and face of first slice is not evenly sauced.

Suggestions/Comments = FOCUS the camera! Smoke ring is almost non-existant (NOT a scoring factor)

9-looks great

Score/Reasons = 9, look moist and end look good. The only thing is there is some fat on the bottom of the slice. This does not bother me, I like the fat, but it may bother some judges

Suggestions/Comments = maybe just cut the fat. I would really like to try this box.

Larry MCBJ

9 - could be a dry spot in front with no juice however, doubt goes to the cook!

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 9. This brisket appears to be an excellent entry. I can only hope that the sauce that was added has not changed the great taste of brisket.

8....Nice color on the Burnt Ends. Sloppy sauce on the slices. The specks in the sauce takes away from the appearance.

Do a better job lining up the slices. Clean the sauce off the box

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Nice full box of moist looking meat. If the box makes it to the table with that sauce on the edges it's going to cost you a point....
For now it's a very good 8.

Bob CBJ/KCBS

Score 9 Samples look moist. Nice uniformity in slices. Burnt ends look very appetizing.

Be sure to wipe sauce off the inside walls of the box.

8 - Slices need to be straighten otherwise it's a 9.

Glenn Stampler
3/12/2015 01:20:41 am

Glenn, KCBS CBJ/CTC.

8. Nice box. Could be a little more even in the cutting and saucing.

Rick KCBS CBJ, CTC
3/17/2015 06:13:40 am

Score/Reasons = 8. Box is nice and full. Slices appear to be moist and uniform in thickness and color. Burnt ends are of nice size, color and mostly uniform in size.

Suggestions/Comments = Since you're the only one who has handled this box, clean up juices along hinge and down inside right of box. Also, consider removing piece of fat on bottom left edge of first slice. Take better pictures; it may have cost you a point! *smile*

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
