BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE such as garnish or smoke ring.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Pale, dry looking slices with that unappetizing band of fat and crumbles on the slice faces. The seeds? on the square ends don't need to be there either. I would guess just by looking that the square ends have not been simmered long enough.
Just above average 7.

score/reason 7 lacking in the color department, no uniformity in sizes and cut lines are jagged pretty much average looking box

Score=8

The slices color looks off and they have some specs. The burnt ends look terrific and like the arrangement of the box.

Score/Reasons = 7, slices look dry and blah, but BEs look promising

Suggestions/Comments = Smoke ring almost non-existent (NOT a scoring factor), looks like they had to slice the slices in half to get enough to put the 7 in the box. Scrunch the slices up a bit more and place the BEs in front or behind the slices - that way you could get whole slices in the box (NOT a scoring factor).

Score/Reasons = 7, slices look very dry Burnt ends also look dry and need sauce

Suggestions/Comments = make better cuts on the slices. The first piece has a discoloring in the lower left corner that is unappealing. Also there are snots(globs) on the slices that are ugly.

Score = 7, possibly an 8 in person.

Meat is pale and isn't sliced very well. Would still make a great sandwich though!!!

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
5/27/2015 03:28:40 am

Score/Reasons = 8, It could be the picture but the slices appear a bit light with a grayish tinge that detracts from the eye appeal of the meat.

Suggestions/Comments = Give the judges fewer things to pick on and you will get better scores. Examples are the meat goobers, knife marks on the slices, uniformity of the slices, trim the fat a bit more, try to keep the burt end meat a bit higher on the garnish.

5 - unappetizing all over.

I would rate a 7. Slices look pale and dry . Uneven color

7 - Looks dry and unappetizing.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8, There is a big dark spot on the left side of the front slice. Can't tell if that is bark or something else, but most of the other slices don't have that so it looks out of place. Also there are big specks of something on slices 1, 5 & 6 that take away from the appearance.

7. Burnt ends look good but slices take away from the presentation.

comments- 1 st piece has a bit of fat and a dry looking end, 4 th piece has tool mark pressed or pronounced cut pattern in the meat

7. Look like serration marks from a knife. Also color is to light for my taste.

Vern - KCBS MCBJ

8- the right side of the first slice has on odd dark spot. Should remove the fat along the bottom of the slice...

Score/Reasons = 6, average looking at best.Color is off on slices. Knife marks on slices. Left side of slices are ragged, but right side is cut cleanly. Slices are not wide enough. Seasoning or something is evident on several slices that just shouldn't be there.

Suggestions/Comments = I wouldn't be looking forward to tasting this because the appearance has already turned me off. Burnt ends look okay, but I'm not expecting a good taste.

8- Appears dry.

Score/Reasons: 7 - The BE's look pretty good. The sliced looks gray and boring to me. I acknowledge it could be the photo and/or it could be my PC. Either way, I only can see what's before more in the medium in which it's presented.

Suggestions/Comments: Better meat or better photo's or a new PC for me or all of the above.

6. Wow. Crazy box. The slices are unappetizing in terms of color, and the thickness of the cut makes me think mush. The burnt ends looks MUCH better. Honestly, I would have just put those in the box and hoped for the best.

Wayne KCBS/CBJ

Score/Reasons = 6. The leading slice has an unusual dark area on the left end, and the fatty edge (which appears to be the fat in the overlap area between the flat and point muscles) is not appealing. Almost all slices have crumbles on them, and in contrast to the right edge of the slices, the left edges look rough. The slices appear dry. The burnt ends have a good color and the placement of the meat in general fills the box nicely.

Comments - A combination of small flaws accounted for my "average" score.

Bob CBJ/KCBS
5/28/2015 04:16:18 am

Score 6 Dull looking box. Samples appear dry. Would have been better to even the ends of the slices on the left side, also. Does not look appetizing.

nice bark, looks boiled not smoked 6

Glenn, KCBS CBJ, CTC
5/28/2015 11:01:16 am

6 - The slices (could be the picture) look grey and unappetizing. The slicing itself looks sloppy. In general the burnt ends look a little better.

Suggestion - A little well applied sauce would go a long way in helping appearance.

7 looks a little on the dry side

BLUESMOKE MCBJ/COMP COOK

7...Not an appetizing looking box. Slices has goobers and looks dry. Nice bark on the Burnt Ends but look dry. Nothing really special about the box.

Do a better job lining up the slices. It would probably improve the appearance by trimming the fat off the bottom of the front slice.

Overall a 7 -- burnt ends look nice. It's the slices, look too bland, not cut even and don't like the squared off look.

william holladay (SCBA)

7= box lacks uniformity, meat appears to be dry, slices are roughly trimmed.

A finishing glaze is needed.

6. Slices look grey and a little dry. Looks like it needs some sauce. Fairly uniform slices. Burnt ends look pretty good

Glenn KCBS CBJ CTC
6/29/2015 07:12:50 am

7 - Meat looks dry and could use a little saucing. The slicing is very uneven. The burnt ends are also not very uniform.

Rick KCBS CBJ,CTC
7/4/2015 04:23:46 am

Score/Reasons = 7 (maybe 8 in person). Box is nice and full. Slices appear to be moist and uniform in thickness and color. Knife marks visible. Pieces of something scattered on several slices. Burnt ends are of nice size, color and mostly uniform.

Suggestions/Comments = Practice knife skills, eliminating the "saw" marks on the slices. Seasonings from the top maybe?, were smeared on several pieces. Be particular and pay more attention to the small details. Try to tile slices in the order and orientation they were cut.

Tammy

Score=6, meat looks old & dried out, burnt ends are not uniform & slices look a little thick

Stacy Ayers

Score =7, meat looks dry, and overall appearance of box is just messy looking

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
