7 Good looking meat, but nothing special that would make it stand out and the meat seems to be a bit sloppy with the rub and sauce just tossed on the cuts instead of brushed on evenly.

I'd give it a 8. The meat looks tasty, the presentation is good, but the slices are not equally sized so each judge won't get the same size portion. It's a small thing but that's the way I see it.

6 - Average

This box is a real poser. The meat and greens generally look good, but the multiple sizes, and 'unburnt' ends cause me to score lower. The ends look dry (from the pic) and just dropped in. Also, the box looks, for lack of a better word, rather empty. I would however, like to taste it. Very tough one. I'd love to see it in person.

Unusual orientation which doesn't work for me. The meat looks ok but chunks in front seem like they were just thrown in without regard for placement. Front slice is a bit dry looking and there is some debris on it.

Difficult from the pic. Looks like uneven slices. Lots of "crud" on the slices and that takes away from the appearance (eyes went first to the globs). Burnt ends look more like diced flat, and not too appealing.

Meat looks dry and the top looks messy.
Good job on the lettuce, but the meat is lacking. wouldn't hurt to put more meat in it either.

KCBS
I give it an 8.
remember, I am easy on appearance scores.
I dont like to see so much sauce on brisket or so uneven and the burnt ends in a pile dont look so burnt and a small row up the right side might be nicer. Many times folks really want to show off the burnt ends without sauce. And as a judge your eye goes immediately back to the burnt ends and as the carton is passed around you are looking for which morsel of ends you are going to delicately grab upon.

The slices have chips of beef from slicing just left on them. First slice looks dry but I see a small pool of sauce on the bark? Need to fan them out a little better. The burnt ends look just like they were dropped into a pile in the box with absolutely no thought given at all to their presentation! All the good looking bark on the burnt end is not facing the judges!

Being slightly generous I would give a score of 7. The box orientation is unappealing and sloppy. The size of the slices look stingy. The burnt ends don't even look like what they are. The chunks of ? on the meat shows lack of care in preparation. The meat looks dry. This cook needs to rethink his entire box.

I don't like the layout...looks like the larger slices pooped out the nuggets. Slices look a little rough and dry. On the good side, the bark looks tasty and there's a nice little smoke ring.

7 Meat looks moist, although messy. Slice six looks like it's missing a section. Sauce looks congealed which is not appealing at all. Ends showing are not "burnt". Why bother? Interesting box- Modern Art meets BBQ Competition.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
