overall nice box. Parts of the meat look more moist than others, don't know if this is a photo thing or a suace/glaze application thing. If it were uniform you get a 9.

Looks juicy, but looks pale. Needs a little color

This *could* be the pic, and probably is. The meat has a little bit of a pale look to it. The edges on the left side are askew, and there seems to be little flakes here n there. Otherwise, this is a NICE lookin' entry. I'm nit picking really. If it's not actually as pale in real life, I would've given this one a 9.

Holy Brisket batman I hope you have an appetite!!

Nice layout color is a bit pink, but thin glaze/sauce is right on. Pieces seem to be a bit thick, but hard to tell.

I give it a 7

8 Possibly 7 but probably 8

I would guess this is dry as the apparent moisture is obviously sprayed or dipped on. The grain looks like they had a good piece of meat.
Just a personal preference but I wish more teams would leave some fat on their brisket. Very important for moist result and with proper rub leads to perfect brisket.

Score 8. Many times judges state that the box needs more meat. With this box less meat and more garnish showing would add to the contrast and make the box more appealling. The meat looks great, nice color, nice texture, and nice glaze.

Slices are very uniform in shape and size. Lots of meat which is always appealing. The addition of burnt ends adds eye appeal to the box but I don't score down for them not being in the box.
My only critic here is what I perceive on the lead slice to be a splotchy area from the absorbtion of injection. Either there was too much injection placed into one area or the injection was mixed stonger than suggested? I don't know which or if either is the case. I only know that when I see a slice with an area of saturation like that it ruins the visual appeal for me. When I clicked on the picture and a larger image was delivered it was more evident than looking at the image presented on the page.
Would like to know what other judges think of brisket slices with splotchy areas like that that appear to be related to injection techniques or injection mixing errors?

8 Wow, where's the beef? That's one full box. Nice slices, but uneven on the left side. What was sprayed on it, though? It's pretty shiny for brisket.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
