6--too much trimming, ragged ends on left, injection blotches, a light glaze and some proper parsley placement would help alot

7-- I like the presentation but looks dry

Sauce looks gloppy and unappealing. slices look meager, and the sliced off on one side and natural rounding on the other isn't in your favor. Ends look a little over cooked.

Tips- build a little taller denser parsley bed so that it lifts the meat up and out for the bottom of the box.

Skip the sauce if the meat is moist.

If the ends aren't primo, just leave them out. You can win without them, but when they aren't right, they'll hurt you.

Placing the ends at the back of the box helps showcase the slices.

score 9. Just to make the box slightly more appealling I would move the burnt ends to the back. I believe the sliced brisket is more attractive and should be the first thing a judge would view.

portions are small..would like to see box filled with product. Meat appears dry and streaked...7

Small slices, uneven sauce/rub. Looks like a jaggedy kinda flap on the 2nd slice.

All easy things to remedy - could be a 9

an 8
because the sauce is so uneven on separate slices. #1 and #4??? The burnt ends raised the score up!!

make the sauce on the slices consistant and it goes a 9. They could have been cut a bit longer tho.

I give it an 7

Slices look good and bites are ok.

Left side of slices are not a clean cut and slices are a bit small. Bites look a bit too dark and almost look like a briquette.

Score low 9 on appearance
Could do with out the juice/sauce so heavy on the first piece. Third burnt end could be turned a little deeper into the bow (white meat showing on front)and the six does not look as good as first five.

Not great, but not terrible. Smallish pieces, and a little dark bark.

Box could be a little fuller.
The brisket looks perfectly cooked. Even though it looks like there is some darned glaze on it, it still looks good.
Wish they'd cooked it with some fat on it and then they could have dispensed with injections and glaze.
I want the burnt ends now.
I'd probably up this to a 9. It looks better than almost all the brisket we see. They should have put more in the box.
Teams, remember the table captains and volunteers/organizers!

Burnt ends look desicated and incinerated. Box looks empty. Trim the brisket to make a pleasing appearance in the box. On the upside, the garnish looks good! 7

Slices look dry, box's tend to score better when they are more full of meat.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
