The slices look really nice, they would fit in the box better if they were cut prior to cooking so you could get some green around them on the sides. The really sad thing is that there are only three chunks, you need at least 6 so all the judges get one. I am afraid that the score will drop and that is a shame because the slices look great and it takes a lot of time to produce such good looking brisket.

8. Burnt ends are too big - 3 of the judges aren't going to get any. Slices look good.

I'd give it an 8 based on this picture because I only see 3 chunks of burnt-ends. If you include them there should be enough for every judge. Other than that it looks good, nice an moist.

8 - Meat looks appetizing, but not a "9" appetizing. The middle looks like the main parts of the meat that got the sauce/Au jus. The ends looks like they didn't get any. With only 3 burnt end pieces, there is a possiblity you may piss off the 3 judges that didn't get a piece and in turn may impact your scores.

Unfortunately for me the photo technique is way off. The center section of the slices look really appetizing but the right 3rd of all the pieces look like they didn't get any glaze at all. Nice symetry of slize placement. Not judging the garnish, but, the overall look of the box I believe would be improved if there was equal green on the sides, as is, the green in the front only, is distracting.

Piece ends look dry while centers are discolored with glaze/sauce. does look like there is a decent amount of rub on it so there might be some good flavor unless the glaze/sauce covers it up or ruins it. Wish it had a little fat to make it juicy instead of fake stuff. Could be natural juices but I never get that at events. Should have 6 burnt ends. those are big enought to cut in half.

Paint is uneven.. I assume there are 6 ends?

It looks like a 9...moist and natural (looks like meat not sauce). Good slices, bark, etc. BUT...why only 3 burnt ends? If I was one of the three judges who didn't get one, I'll make them down heavily on taste or texture.

The color and shine are appealing but it looks a bit over cooked and the burnt ends are to large, they should be bite size to look more appetizing. 7

Interesting, only 3 burnt ends. Lets see how many score down (wrongly) as a result. There are 6 pieces in there, and that's all the rules state.

Meat looks good!!

Score 8. I would be concerned that some judges might score this box down with only three burnt ends and I would add three more or just leave them out. The parsley might also be better used to frame the meat. The slice themselves look great and alone with a better job on the parsley I would have given this box a nine.

I would give a 1 as there is not enough burnt ends for all the judges.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
