7. Meat looks a little dry, but I'm interested. I might go 8 with different light.

Uneven strange looking slices, uneven sauce or at least moisture, most of slices look dry, pulled isn;t really appealing...

I'd score this a 6

Box thrown together with no thought of placement or sizes. Several places where strands of meat, and sauce drippings were ignored. Pulled brisket? Dont have a problem with that, but never seen it.

I'd give this a strong 7.

The presentation is pretty ragged, with slices off all shapes/lengths next to each other.

Suggestion: place slices of equal length, color and shape side-by-side for uniformity. Brush with juices to help blend them together.

Something tells me this brisket tasted pretty good!

SCORE/REASONS....5....Don't even know where to start,lol!...over cooked brisket is my 1st thought... no effort taken to make box is my last thought.

SUGGESTIONS... I know some cooks like to present a tapered slice look, which is fine, but this doesn't/can't fall into that category...so make sure pieces are even and aligned. If you want to present pulled brisket, which is not a problem, use it as a bed for your NICE looking slices.

If I give a 5 for presentation, you have major work to do.

s/r 5,this is the worst turn in ever on bbg critic, meat looks very dry, overcook, uneven peices, pulled part looks like hamburger,

s/ throw it out and start over..

8 - appears on the dry side

That front piece doesn't look as dry - it has some sauce maybe, something that makes it shine a little. The absence of this shine is what makes me think dry for the back pieces.

I'd give it an 7 or 8. The sliced pieces of meat could have been better arranged and all the same size

6(or less)--looks like cook attempted to salvage some over cooked meat--

6-different size and color slices. The pulled looks like shoe leather and very haphazardly placed in box. Looks very unappetizing.

Sorry but this box is not good. Maybe a 5 would be more appropriate. Look at the boxes on this site. Slices are unevenly cut, sauce is on the garnish, back slices look dry, the shredded looks pretty good but it is partially covering the front slice. Take your time and try to make a beutiful picture with your presentation.

a 6
I dont like the dark color or hazard slice arrangement. They are so different in size and look dry.

6 - Apparently one piece already failed the pull test. Slices are randomly placed fatside up and down. Clean up the box.

I'm imagining that a few here will slam this entry for a number of reasons, starting with "what is pulled brisket" or "why no burnt ends", or "slices aren't the same size", etc. when we're supposed to be judging the over-all appetizing (or not) nature of this meat.

The pulled section looks ok. To me it's more attractive and therefore more appetizing if they're all going the same way and not just mixed/jumbled.

The slices appear to have had a sauce brushed unevenly and missed a section on a piece in the upper-left of the photo. That takes away a little (discoloration). It has a slightly dry appearance. Otherwise it looks like brisket that I'd want to eat.

6. The slices don't line up, just look like they were thrown in there with some slices maybe flipped upside down and the cuts don't appear clean. Overall just doesn't look like much time was taken to put the box together.

Score 6. This box looks to be made with very little concern. The meat slices are not uniform in size or slicing, The pulled meat in the front of the box hides the slices which is what most judges are going to look at first. The box looks "thrown together" and this cook might want to rethink his entry and arrangement.

7 to 8
Overall, nice looking meat. But for a better appearance score, the slices could be more uniform and sliced more carefully. Personally, I don't care for the addition of the pulled brisket.

Really interesting box. The pulled gives this a unique appearance, but the lack of an organized arrangement detracts from what might be a tasty batch of brisket. Even up the size of the slices, lay them out better and tighten the pulled pile and this could.be a winner.

This box was rushed to be put together. The slices are very uneven. I can tell you put the slices in there then put the pulled in there. To me you hide the slices with the pulled and you took away from the slices.

Suggestions/Comments: Take a little more time building your box. Very back of the box behind meat and garnish there is some sauce. I would not have taken any points away from that but then on the right side of box beside the sliced and on the garnish you have stray pieces of pulled on there. Which leads me to think you were in a hurry and rushed the box. Take 5 to 10 more min and you would have maybe a 7 from me. Brush the sauce and and make cleaner cuts on your meat without leaving debris and have the same size of slices then you would have 8 possibly 9 from me. Hope my suggestions help.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
