6 maybe 7
I like that they are not overtrimmed but there is no bark to speak of. Thses look hopelessly dry. Splotches of sauce on 3 slices. I'd prefer none but this stuff probably needs sauce due to dryness.
I just don't understand why such a high percentage of teams trim all the fat off their brisket. Many judges I discuss this with concur.

6--average at best

a dip in some 'juice' may help in making it more appealing

7. Meat looks dry. Brown streaks and brown bits on meat detract from appearance. Another cook who doesn't know how to take a picture from the front of the box.

I would score this entry a 6. There is staining in at least three of the portions and it looks dry and the texture looks fair at best. It also looks like it was carved with a dull knife and that appears to have resulted in ragged looking pieces.

Score: 8
At first, I was thinking a 9 for this box. However, on closer review, I noticed a significant difference in the meat color and the particles on the pieces. Several pieces look like they may be a little dry. This may be the result of lighting for the picture. I like how the pieces are pretty uniform and carefully placed in the box. Nice looking box.

Looks on the dry side - other than that it's a very well put together entry.

6 - Looks dry and those splotches are unappetizing. Also, remove the goobers.

I'd give it a 7. Looks good for the most part but nothing special and it looks like there was just a little sauce dribbled on the pieces in the upper part of the picture.

Could be a 5... Cook, I feel for you. It's obvious that you took care in smoking this meat and removing the fat cap, etc. However, the meat looks particularly dry and cold. Also there's something that was brushed on afterwards that's glopped and frankly isn't very appetizing or appealing in any way. This is a case where the saying "fill the box" really would've helped because more meat would've allowed for tighter feathering presentation of the meat, and kept the meat both more moist (if it had any moisture) and kept it as hot as possible.

This meat looks dry as unbuttered toast and totally unappetizing. It has something all blotchy on the top slices as well.

Suggestions: If the meat is drier than you want, expose less of the facing of the slice by fanning the meat (like a deck of cards slid to one side). Also if the meat is dry, try dragging each slice through the au jus in the foil before arranging it. Once you have an appetizing moist look to the meat, face the slices toward the judges so that it stands out at them when the table captain presents it. always think in terms of the angle of view the judges will have when presented.

Score: 6

Few things here why I gave it a 6.
1) Meat looks very dry.
2) Several pieces of the meat at the top are stained (which if a judge were to see this box would be turned around and what we are seeing in the pic as the top of the box is actually the front of the box for judges).
3) Also the pieces do not seem to be uniformed. The very bottom piece and the middle piece seem to have a crook in them which the shape kind of looks like the state of Idaho.
4) Also the middle piece seems to have some stray pieces of debris.

Not bad, but several things just could have been better. Third slice from right and second slice from left just don't look similar to the rest. Too dark on the top end. "trash" on the front surface of the far left slice. Doesn't look very moist either.

The photo is obviously upside down from how it would be presented but still a nice variation going corner to corner instead of top to bottom. Looks a bit dry, but hard to tell from the photo. Otherwise looks very nice. I'd give it an 8 on presentation, maybe a 9 if it were in front of me and actually wasn't dry.

cbj/comp cook, 7 the meat looks kinda dry and it looks average to above average compared to the boxes i've seen in comp's.

Looks dry and discolored = unappealing. I'd score a 7 (above average) although I'm not sure it deserves it.

Meat is sloppy, clean top 2 pieces and would look and score better. Pieces need to be placed more uniform.

Dick - CBJ

Score 7. The box is not appealing. The dry look of the meat, the rough cuts and small leftover pieces, and the uneven lay-out of the box need better attention.

With a little work these could be nines, but the best I can do is an eight. The slices are very nicely uniform in size and color, but the little bits and pieces of (?) on the top three really detracts. Those three have some spotty discoloration, too. Not sure if that's sauce or juice or what, but it takes away from the meat. I can't tell if they're dry or not from this picture, but a little au jus or glaze on these brisket slices would have done it for me.

6 - Average

Meat looks very dry. The three pieces from left to right look "splotchy" with something, maybe and injection?

Garnish and arrangement are good.

I would give this box an 8; the brisket looks slightly dry, but it could be the picture; the pieces are uniform; there is some sauce on the top pieces, looks to be maybe just touched by fingers, not sure; I would try to make the sauce (if using) uniform and make them all look the same.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
