CBJ & Cook

DQ'd.

The chunks from the sauce are larger than 1/8 inch from what I can see in the photo (may have been different in real life). This is according to KCBS rules and regulations.

six(generous) --one of those boxes that make you hope that it tastes better then it looks

Nice bark but that's about it. The corner chunks do not look good at all. Although I don't think that would be considered sculpted meat, It is such a unique arrangement that I would be asking the KCBS rep for clarification as to whether this should be DQ'd.
Slices are too thick
Funky chunky drizzle sauce makes me think this won't taste like good smoked meat.
Suggestion: Cut those chunks up into a bunch of burnt ends

Uh-oh, I think this would be a zero score for 2 of six judges as there are only 4 pieces of the chunks at the corners. But as this is judging for appearance, I'd give this box a 7. The arrangement looks good but the slices are not as uniform as they could be and there a a lot of particles on the meat. It appears that some pieces are a bit over-cooked. While somewhat appealing to the eye, this box doesn't jump out a me.

6. Average box of brisket here. No real "pop" to it. Not sure about those 4 big triangular pieces, or how 6 judges are supposed to share/sample them when the judges are not allowed to break or pull apart the pieces. Slices are sloppily arranged. Lettuce is covering up part of one of the slices.

Score: 5

I hate to give such a low score but it just doesnt look good. But I have to say I think you are real close to scoring big on this box with a little work. The way its placed in the box it looks very artistic and I think it would score 8s and 9s if the meat was up to par and not burned.

The corner pieces look like burnt apple turn overs. The slices are way to thick which right away leads me to think its over cooked and falling apart. The chunks of sauce on the flesh of the meat is not appealing. I would also suggest you work on your garnish as its all over the place. At the top of this picture is way to much granish which is covering your meat but to the middle left of the pic is not enough garnish.

If you work on all of those things I really do think you are looking at 8s and 9s.

Only 4 chunks but did have 6 slices for the judges to taste. Slice on end broken off, others not in uniform alignement. Nit picky but things we have to look at to give division between entries.

9---very hard to score because of picture quality. An unusual presentation. If it was me I would have not put that much sauce on it but it still looks great.

I would give this box an 8, pieces are uniform, good color, looks like sauce is a little bit messy; I would certainly make sure you have 6 pieces to present, instead of the 4 in each corner; maybe there are more underneath that can't be seen? or cut them in half if you are presenting this way.

Color of pic is affecting my view of this box. Innovative layout and I like the ends. Could have sliced ends in half so there were at least 6 portions of ends.

I'd score this an 8 (Very Good)

cbj/comp cook 7 or 8, the 4 big pieces look dry and the other ones could stand to be stacked a little better. The 6 slices do you look delicious tho.

While the triangular pieces in the corners fill the box but with only 4 large pieces somebody will not get to taste what I assume are burnt ends. Everything is too dark

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
