Pretty much average, overtrimmed, barkless, spam can KCBS brisket.
Sigh. Oh well

Those are beautiful slices! But I can't figure out why the top and bottom slices are there. You have enough meat without them and they detract. It looks like the other pieces have been brushed with something, but they haven't...? That top one could go, entirely, but the bottom slice could have benefited from a little help, too. A high eight is my number.

I cant judge this one. It is just to Mc rib looking and I cant quite see what disturbs me about it. I tried to not consider the much different color of the outsides strips and just judge the front slice but I just cant see the side in close enough detail.

Elkski - If you are going to post a commentin JUDGE MY BOX, please always include a score. Why? Because you are not allowed the option to leave a score blank in competition.

So on future boxes, please make an attempt score the box or just move on to the next box.

The cook really is looking for BOTH your score and comments and BBQ Critic is here to help them out as much as possible.

Thanks Elkski! :-)

9 - Great looking brisket.

I can hear others now.. the last one isn't tucked in. well.. I look at it as them showing me it's cooked evenly through out the brisket.

Nice au Jus put on the meat to ensure moisture by the time it gets to the judges. Those aren't "Goobers" folks.

Looks good would give it a 9, but due to top and bottom pieces, bottom piece needs more sauce, overall very good

8 - Would be a 9 if the goobers were picked off...

6 While meat looks moist, it, for the most part, looks kind of pale. It also looks messy due to the injection tracking and sauce/juice.

The odd positioning of the top slice is probably not the best for appearance either.

More bark would also help the score IMHO

If the front and back slices looked like the middle slices it would be a 9 from me.

7-- Would have been nice if the last 2 outside pieces weren't added. Obviously different colors , goobers on the top piece

8 - Very Good

Even slices, nicely presented.

Deducted due to "splotches" in meat.

I would ask table captain about the legality of the entry. This is certainly unique enough to be considered marking or designing.

Score 7. The brisket just doesn't look appealing. I believe it is caused by the uneven saucing of the meat and the artificial color.

8. Good looking brisket box. Clean up the surfaces of the slices.

No WOW factor. Too much sauce. Garnish looks good.

Score: 9 - great looking box, meat is uniform, looks delicious, and juicy. Bordering on too much sauce on some of the pieces for me but that may just be the angle of the photo.

Interesting, nice smoke ring but very little bark... 9 anyway, looks very appetizing.

9 - the box looks clean, the meat looks appetizing, nice color, uniform sizes, alot of meat! Slices are clean, not too over sauced. The back slice looks like it missed the sauce, but could be the picture.

The color is a little off, but it could just be the photo, so I'll give the cook the benefit of the doubt. Nice, consistent slices; good layout; not terribly oversauced; wish I could take a bite!

Not a judge . Looks great , maybe less glaze. It looks uniform in cuts and good greens 8+

Manbearpig - GREENS have no bearing on judging this box. Judge MEAT ONLY only please. Great score, though! ;-)

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
