overcooked and very dry looking, that shiney coat of dip doesnt help this brisket
score 6

7 - Box looks cramped, too many burnt ends (I never thought I'd say *that*).

Bob

Score 9 I like the looks of the burnt ends and there is enough meat to fill the box, without green. Depending upon taste and texture, might be a winner.

Screw the greens and the photo sucks... but this looks DELICIOUS - especially the way the meat is broken apart on the right

8 Few less burnt ends to keep the clutter down.

9 - And the table captain thanks you!!! I want the whole box!!!

Roger

7 because the chunks/burnt ends are thrown in there. Slices look appealing but more thought needs to be put into the arrangement to get other judges on board.

7-8 - The brisket could be better than that, but the poor lighting doesn't give me a chance to tell; the meat looks a little grey, which may not mean anything, but it doesn't make me want to eat it as it's displayed.

8 maybe 9
Pretty good for KCBS style brisket. I sure wonder why fat seems to be banned. The burnt ends look very dry. Buncha fat would make 'em moist and explode with flavor.

8, i like an all meat box. 9 if end pieces were arranged better.

The shadow is preventing seeing the whole box. The meat appears appetizing enough. The burnt ends appear crammed (literally) in there that takes away from some appeal. Also there can be a fine line between appearing moist vs. appearing greasy. This entry IMHO is over the line and looks greasy and isn't as appetizing as it could be.

Burnt ends arranged poorly. Front slice backwards. Good bark and color.

left side of box is lost in shadow, the rest looks helter skelter. No reall plan apparent.

Score 7. Besides being a poor picture with a bad shadow this brisket looks dark, overcooked, and dry.

Keith - KCBS CBJ

7 - Applause for all those burnt ends. Talk about knowing what judges and table captains love to see! More applause for no garnish.

I am a little put off by a lack of uniformity in placement and concerned that this meat appears dry and tough. But there's your trouble with brisket by appearance -- some of the prettiest scores lowest in taste and tenderness while some of the ugliest scores highest in those two. Toughest category to cook -- and toughest to judge too.

Ultimately I know even if tough and a little dry those burnt ends are probably going to taste great.

6. Average. slices are covered up by the chunks. meat looks dry.

John

8 for sure, maybe 9 in real person. No, the broad shadow on the left doesn't help, but, from the photo, this appears to be a nice box of brisket. The face of the slices may be a bit dry. And, no, the lack of garnish does not bother me at all.

6 - The brisket looks dry to me, even with the attemps to disguise the dryness. This looks like it would choke me as I tried to swallow it. On top of that the presentation did not do it any favors. Sorry, I hate winging a 6 at anyone.

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ

Score: 9 - Great looking burnt ends, slices are uniform and placed uniformly in the box. Nice box.

solid 8 maybe 9 at the table. Meat looks moist and tasty. point chunks look great but little heavy on right side

8. looks dry.. those 2 ends on the right side look dry. I love the burnt ends Daaam! The front slice is not totally coated (left side) so I know you painted it!

What I can see (not in the shadow) looks rather dry and the BEs look too meaty - not truly BEs.

9... I like the clean "it's all about the meat" look...wish they would do away with garnish all together. This product is top drawer, moist, amazing bark, great lookin burnt ends, I know by looking that this would be a delicous brisket...makes my mouth water

Dry, overcooked never going away in your mouth. 7

Kev B / KCBS CBJ

Score: 7

Slices look great and moist. Do not like how the burnt ends look. They look a little charred and very un-organized in the placement in the box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
