8 they look great except for the first two on the front row. If they were sauced evenly I'd give this a 9.

8 maybe 9 in person
By coincidence, last weekend in Lexington, NC I found myself sitting beside Tom (CBJ KCBS MBN NCPC & comp cook) who judges here. I mentioned BBQ critic to another judge and then Tom introduced himself. He is a gentleman and a superior judge.Had a lot of fun at the table that day. I wish some of the chicken we judged looked as good as this stuff.

I could probably give this box a nine. The back left piece is pretty small and the color is not consistent but golly, I'd sure like to taste this chicken

8--maybe a touch dry (may just be photo), I appreciate that it looks like chicken....one smaller piece

Looks excellent. KISS (Keep It Simply Silly) seems to work here.

9!

Needs to be more uniform with the size and color. Could have used a spitz before closing the box to give it some sheen. 7

9 some variation is size left rear is small. and color left center is dark. Left front is light and my least desirable piece It might be hat yellow bone or cartilage sticking out.. almost makes this an 8.

8

Very nice chicken entry. The color on one is a bit darker and stands out this way, and it's a bit blotchy. Otherwise was a 9...

8

Remove the skin imperfections in the top middle one and this goes to 9 for me

8. uneven coating of sauce.....irregular sizes & shapes

Box looks a little crowded, Make the sauce application little more even
try dipping meat in sauce with spatula
score 6

Score 8. Nice looking chicken and not oversauced. Place six pieces in the box like the left front and center front and it would be nines all day long.

7

Inconsistant trim, and dry and splotchy sauce. Look to border patrol

Abel CBJ link

I would give the box a 7

Not a bad looking box and pieces look good, but the end "nipples" need to be trimmed sauce isn't even and shows dark / light spots.

7, maybe an 8 in person. Garnish is ok. Chicken pieces are different in size, sauce is not equally applied. Does look moist and appearance aside, I would look forward to tasting them.

6. Average. uneven sauce. some sauce is a little dark. No real "pop" to it. Probably would help if the picture was taken from the front.

9 - Not oversauced. I want one!!

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ

Score: 8 - Very nice color, excellent trimming, placement is uniform. I would have given a 9 if that one piece wasn't so much different in size than the others.

9...finally a chicken box I want to eat!

Could have been trimmed before cooking to get them more alike and for the skin to cover completely. Top middle thigh is too dark and wrinkled compared to the others (looks dry).

7- Not too horrible looking, the meat looks a little dry but the sauce looks like it has set really well. It would benefit well from a glaze to ensure it looks a little more juicey.

7

Decent sizing and color. Sauce is splotchy and the skin pulling back isn't appealing. This could be an 8 in person.

Might want to trip the knuckle.

     State name/CBJ Organization (i.e, Tom - CBJ/KCBS). CBJ=Certified BBQ Judge

    EMAIL FIELD ON FORM:
You must be a "registered" BBQ Critic Online Judge in order to judge boxes on this site. Proof of registration is your email. All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
