Chicken Box 101--8

Josh KCBS CBJ

8 The sauce looks uneven. I wish they all looked more like the one on the top right. I also wouldn't put garnish on top of the meat - it makes the garnish a distraction.

7 messy box, too much glaze, garnish not pretty

8 Nice looking chicken

8 - The only things that are stopping this box from being a nine is that there is a little too much sauce and the parsley placed in the center really takes away from the chicken. Other than those two things, it looks good.

8 sauce a lil heavy for me, as an aside, the garnish in the middle of the box was distracting..

High 8, maybe a 9. Parsley in the middle is a bit over doing it.

7 - Oversauced and the garnish covers the meat.

Solid 8 maybe a 9
Great color nice lookin box. Maybe a little saucy but I'm
pretty forgiving on that

7 Why cover the meat with parsley?

Doug KCBS/CBJ CTC

Nice looking chicken, but I HATE seeing the parsley on top of the chicken in the middle. Please don't hide the meat! I'd give this box and 8.

8 - The two "roses" in the middle of the box were the first thing I saw; garnish should never overshadow the meat. The chicken looks great, and should be the most notable thing in the box.

8 - chicken looks good but overwhelmed by the garnish in the middle

9. I want a piece of that chicken! Garnish adds to the already great looking chicken.

7--splotchy , diff sizes, sloppy sauce

Looks okay, but not great. Sauce a bit uneven, lose the garnish in the middle as it distracts from the appearance of the meat!

Dick-CBJ

Score 8. Nice entry, slightly oversauced or it would be a nine.

Deb/KCBS/CBJ
5/7/2012 07:49:10 am

Score: 8
Oversauced. If the cook had taken a lighter hand with the paintbrush, this would be a 9.

mkevenson CBJ

The meat is not sculpted but the box is. This could be interpreted as an obvious tip off you a judge. I would ask the table captain to call the rep for a determination of DQ. The garnish in the middle is distracting and covers the meat.

7. Uneven sauce, 2 clumps of parsley in the middle do nothing to enhance the appearance of the meat but they do distract the viewer. The judges would probably be in line questioning whether the 4 corner lettuce - 2 clump parsley is "marking".

KCBS CBJ/Comp Cook Nice box. Sauces a little heavy on front pieces. Garnish in center takes away from the appearance of the meat. 8

I score the box a 7.

Nice looking glaze, but it's a bit uneven in places and the chix pieces are not proportional and don't seemed to be trimmed. Plus I don't like the extra garnish "bushes" in the middle. Teams it's a meat contest not a garnish contest so no need to purdy up a box with garnish flowers. A nice clean trimmed garnish bed is more than enough.

Solid 8, maybe a 9. Nice looking box of yardbird. A bit saucy, perhaps, but it's typical of what I'm seeing in the judging tent these days.

Score: 9 - Excellent color, trim, and placement. Nice box.

Original Frostbuster Scores: 9-9-9-9-9-9

Many BBQ Critic judges take issue with the "garnish" in terms of covering the meat, distracting from the meat and possible "marking" concerns. Not one judge at the live contest found issues with the garnish.

This was the first chicken box I presented to me to be photographed and I gotta tell ya judges, I saw an instant 9. I do believe it is the PHOTO that takes away from this particular box. So I can understand how scores here ended up lower.

Four judges scored this box 999, one judge 989 and the last judge 987 (the last judge was also non-certified). Whether that has anything to with anything, I don't know. I simply wanted to point that out.

Interesting comparison thus far...

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
