7 The sauce is too messy

6 - Need to do a better job at applying the sauce, and not so much of it. Where I can see the chicken, it looks very light and unappealing. Just does not look that appetizing to me at all.

7 very sloppy in appearance. Sauce application looks rushed and excessive.

8 nice color, heavy sauce, pleasing arrangement

9...... I love the carmeled outlines..... the two top pieces have yellow spots that stand out but I let that slide. sauce is kinda splotchy and gobby.

Uneven/gloppy sauce (could have been delivery problem) but also that difference between samples is a bit much. Could be solved by picking the 6 most similar samples.

5 - Overcrowded, sloppy presentation and clean the box edges.

7 I want to like this box more but needs to have more care given to the sauce. not more but more even. pc upper right way too much.
second over on bottom left pretty close

Small pieces but still look good

Doug KCBS/CBJ CTC

The sauce is very splotchy with some bare spots on the top pieces. It also looks like there are a few burnt spots. I'd give this box an 8.

Probably a 9, maybe an 8, depends on viewing it in person. Like the appearance, only negative remark I have is that the sauce appears splotchy in that it is not uniform in thickness on the chicken. Also a couple of small places on the container that could be wiped clean.

6-- looks like bone sticking out on front middle piece and comon who put the sauce on Helen Keller?

7
Interesting arrangement to fit 8 in a box, but should have taken time to "respread" sauce after handling the pieces. Sauce is definitely not spread evenly and is too thick in places.

I like that there is 8 pieces, but too much sauce !
7

Score 7. Sauce is too heavy, too dark, and applied uneven to deserve any high score.

Deb/KCBS/CBJ

Score: 8
Cook got heavy-handed with the sauce brush and it cost 'em. Looks kinda gloppy.
However, this is a nice example of how to fit in a couple extra pieces for the TC & volunteers. Creative layout.

Inconsistant trim and saucing. Do edge patrol!

5. Sauce uneven. Burnt on the bottom on some of them. Skin looks pretty white under the dark uneven sauce.

KCBS/CBJ/Comp Cook. Miss matched pieces. Irregular clolor and sloppy sauce. Like the arrangement. Needs a lot more attention to detail.

I give the box a 7. Sauce is a mess and looks sloppy. I would also suggest leaving out the 2 grunts from the box. 6 good looking pieces are going to get a better score then 6 good and 2 ok pieces.

FYI if it's in the box I have to judge it so make sure it's just as good as the other pieces.

8 at best. Unusual arrangement, but that's ok. However, the uneveness of the sauce on each piece and from piece-to-piece is very offputting and distracting.

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ

Score: 8 - While smaller pieces, they are placed in the box nicely, have been trimmed well, and have good color. There's just a bit too much sauce and it gives the pieces a messy look or I'd have scored a 9.

Frostbuster BBQ Judge "Appearance" Scores: 8,8,8,9,9,9

Most Frostbuster judges said "good spice" in this chicken. Then one judge said "a little spicy." Go figure... ;-)

By the way, this is one of those boxes that just isn't photogenic. Much better looking in person and I think the Frostbuster scores show it.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
