NOTE: Please ignore the FOIL and just judge the meat

Why would we be asked to ignore the foil when this is a DQ? I can only imagine that the cook would like to know how they would of scored IF they had not put the foil in the box. Anyway, if there was no foil, I would score this entry a 7. The chicken looks overcooked and the heavy sauce looks baked on making it a very dry looking entry.

Not much wow factor. Sauce looks dry and no shine. 6

Score: 9 - Excellent color, positioning, and trim. Not too much sauce. Looks ready to sink my teeth into. Nice job.

seven--dull looking

Needs more shine and uniform trimming

Score 6 I just can't ignore the foil. The contrast of green to the chicken (or any BBQ) changes the appearance.

7 Very ordinary look, no pop to it, possibly dry

6 - This box has no "Pop" for me.

I'd ask about the foil being an illegal item in the box

The meat looks appetizing but the facing is not consistent. It looks to me from this picture like the front pieces are tilted away from the end of the box and the top pieces toward the front of the box. The haphazard manner in which the pieces are placed leads you to believe it might not be as tasty as it may in fact be which is what scoring for appearance is all about. Another thing to note is the sizing of the pieces varies enough to be noticeable although it may be exaggerated with the placement of the pieces.

This one is kinda tuff. The pieces may have looked much better had the pic been taken earlier. It looks like the box sat long enough for the sauce to dry some and lose its sheen. Aside fron a dark spot or two this is a solid 7

7 - The seasoning/sauce on the top of the chicken looks too thick and pasty, frankly not very appetizing. Kudos on getting relatively uniform size and shape on the thighs.

9 - I want to taste!!! Be careful about centering the product in the box...

Good looking chicken. Pretty uniform in size in color, but the lower right thigh looks a little lighter than the rest. I'd give this box an 8.

I will assume this is not a kcbs contest because of the foil

Deb/KCBS CBJ

Score: 9
Nice color and consistency of size/shape. Could be just a touch too saucey, but no down-grade from me cause it could also be the lighting and glare in this photo. Sure looks good enough to eat.

Looks like chicken, but looks dull, maybe dry. Sauce not spread evenly on bottom two thighs.

8 (would be DQ'd for the foil)
An 8 is high if this is as dark as it seems but I think that it's just a dark picture

Frank CBJ

7. This one looks a bit heavy on the sauce and a bit dark (dry?) - but it may be the exposure or my screen. Thanks for the comment on the foil. Too many judges are considering the garnish in their appearance scores. It's a meat contest not a garnish contest. Some competitors are devoting up to four hours in prepping their boxes knowing that some of us are grading in part on garnish.

All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
