7, heavy on the sauce

7-dark, too saucy, splotchy. Only 2 legs? yikes...Is bib lettuce allowed?

7 in appearance
I want to taste both thigh & drum stick.
But I know I won't. Its OK to put two different
cuts in the box, But make sure each judge can
some of each.

Score 8 I hope the lettuce is legal. I like the addition of the drum sticks.

That's a bad picture however, the oversauced presentation will get an 8 or maybe a 7 in person.

Looks a bit dark and way too much sauce. I do like the drumsticks in with the thighs!

7--color and sauce seem uneven

Score 7. This meat has too much sauce and is to dark to give it a higher score. This is a BBQ Meat contest, not a sauce contest.

8, maybe 9. Nice looking chicken. I know muffin pan chicken is legal, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Also, I try to counsel teams to put at least 6 of anything that goes into a box. I think I understand the reason for the two drumsticks, but I think some judges will score down for that. I know that's not right, but that won't stop them from doing it.

Photo needs more light.
8, likely 9 in person.

Nice dark color. Looks over sauced. Well trimmed pieces. Not sure how 6 Judges will share 2 legs. Yellow Clam shell so not a KCBS contest. 7

Hi Blue Smoke,

The cook said this is a WHITE box (bad lighting affected the appearance of the clamshell). Regarding your comment on sharing
thighs & legs, see my comment to Ed.

Is that spinich? If so, 1. The picture is too dark otherwise to give it a fair score

Very nice but if putting different types of chicken in the box, make sure there is enough of each piece for every judge.

Hey Big Al,

Agreed on your suggestion to NOT put two different types of meat in the box unless there is enough for all the judges. Oh,and KUDOS! for still giving this box a 9 and not allowing this awkward situation to affect your score. Nice job!

The photo is kind of dark which makes it hard to judge. The pieces are pretty uniform, except for the piece in the upper right corner. It looks a little smaller than the rest. The sauce looks evenly applied. I'd give this box an 8.

Is that spinach? Is this a KCBS box?

Hi Keith, this is Butter Lettuce - which is LEGAL

First thing I'd do is have the TC check with the Rep about your garnish.
Really? Which 2 judges get the legs? Which 4 judges wanted a leg?
Bad idea, me thinks.
The left leg looks over sauced compared to the rest.
The good news is the rest of the chicken looks great!
As it sits, 6

Hi Ed,

Since I am the BBQ Critic TC, I checked with the cook and they said the garnish is Butter Lettuce - which is legal.

Regarding your question of which 2 judges get the legs and which 4
judges wanted the leg? First off, KUDOS! on telling cooks it is a bad idea to have 6 pieces of one meat and 2 pieces of a different kind of meat. I would highly recommend to cooks NOT to do this. As you can see it causes some here judges to THINK TOO MUCH about your box and you do not want that to happen in competition.

BOTTOM LINE JUDGES: Mike Lake always taught us to score the meat that is "IN THE BOX," not "WHAT YOU WANT IN THE BOX." So in this case, it's possible the first two judges would get a thigh & leg (if they follow what is taught in class - to take one of each "kind" of meat presented). Then the other four judges would get the thighs. It is also possible everyone just might take one meat each since there is not enough of every meat to go around and the rest goes to the volunteer table.

This is a very confusing situation for judges and again I recommend
to cooks DO NOT DO THIS.

But I think the first two judges should take both types of chicken to
make make sure each type of meat is judged. Now - should the other four judges score down their thigh because they didn't get a leg?

Hell no! We are to judge what is on our plate - PERIOD. We don't
judge a box based on what we want in the box.

Chicken looks good but would like to see more uniformity in top pieces

8. Never seen this combination before. Looks tasty albeit a bit saucy.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
