Score 8. Lighten up on the sauce and it could be a nine.

8. Box looks nice, but there's too much gloppy sauce for me.

Good color. Should have done a better job of trimming the 2 pieces on the bottom right. Not sure if the skin is covering the entire piece on the bottom right. 8

Hey Big Al,

You and Ed punched this box with a good knuckle idea. Nice job!

I decided to go with a 9 because that chicken really stands out to me and I want a bite. Now to be honest I was torn between 8 and 9 but went with 9 because I always give the benefit of the higher score to the cook when I'm torn. If box prep/set-up was any sloppier at all it would have been an 8. We all know that it is a meat contest and that garnish isn't judged, but, that said, careless garnish affects the overall look of the meat which is being judged. It's uneven, there is a big sprig sticking up at the top right that immediately draws the eyes away from the meat (which you don't want to do...the meat should draw all of the attention in a well garnished box), and there is a clump in the middle right. All those things distract from the great looking chicken in the box and potentially makes the overall presentation look careless which could affect the score.

Hi Brian,

WOW! A big KUDOS for judging the meat and not allowing the garnish problems to impact your score. You gave very good suggestions to the cook on the use of garnish. The reason Brian did this is because some judges do judge garnish.

Cooks - if you use garnish, make it as neat as possible and use it to showcase your meat.

This is a high 8 low 9 for me. It could be a bit more uniform, shears do wonders for evening out the length of chicken bones as there are a few that are too long. Another minor thing that might bring down the score is they aren't perfectly shaped but sometimes that is unavoidable.
Other than that it appears to be sauced perfectly, it is nice and even in the box and overall seems to be a very appetizing presentation, great job.

8,9 box would be better w/o any garnish

Hi r,mcbj

Sounds like you are judging garnish here, but I am going to assume you made this comment as a "suggestion." Make sure you write SUGGESTION when giving garnish suggestions.

BOTTOM LINE: I agree with your suggestion that the box would be better without garnish. Um, I think ALL BOXES would be better without garnish.

That's my suggestion. ;-)

Great looking chicken box. Nice uniform pieces in both size, color and sauce distribution. This box is a 9.

Pretty chicken! Would be gooder if you turned the knuckles away from front. Very nice glaze.
8, hide the bones 9

Ed,

Nice suggestion on reversing the knuckles. A little attention to detail can really impact a score.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
