Sorry this is a 6. Way too much sauce and poor presentation.

8 - meed garnish - looks too stark.

Unable to judge the meaat because of the sauce. Front two pieces should have been centered. Sauce on box probably due to the handling at turn in....6

Score 9 I can't give this cooker anything less. Unless the sauce is better than any I've tasted on chicken, it is a "little" thick, but I like the way this guy caught my attention. If more were presented like this the score would fall, but for now, it's a 9

7. Too much sauce. Could be the picture.

6 Sauce heavy, uneven presentation, not appealing at all

A 7. Too much sauce applied unevenly. Pattern not very creative.

6 - WAY oversauced and I'm wondering who stole the missing piece.

I'd be looking closely for puddles after we got our samples.

8,would be a 9 but the sauce looks a little too heavy for my liking.

8 - looks good. The lack of symmetry that a 9th piece would offer cost it a point. NOTE: I did not take off for my negative personal attitude about chicken presented what appears to be muffin pan style. It simply looks unnatural.

7 maybe a 6
Too much sauce. It is impossible to see whether these thighs look good or not. I've never seen this much sauce on compettition chicken. It's like they are trying to cover up an effort that went bad

I cant see the meat for the sauce

Score: 8
While this chicken has nice color and the pieces are very consistant, the over-application of sauce detracts from the appearance of the meat. Lighten up on the sauce and it could have been a 9. (Less is more.)

Score: 6

Way over sauced. Dont like placement in box.

Suggestions: 1) Cut back on the sauce. First thought that came to my head was you are trying to cover up something. 2) Not sure if you could only put 8 pieces in the box or you only had 8 good pieces but you could have worked on the placement a little better. When I look in here my eyes go to the bottom corner then I start counting. I think if you were only going to put 8 pieces in the box with no garnish then I would have made my empty spot be in the middle instead of bottom right corner. That way when I look in the box my eyes would have focused on the middle and saw the overall product.

Dude, somebody stole your 9th piece of chicken that would have completed your box.
As a judge I'm not supposed to make my scoring decision based on my personal likes or dislikes of candy chicken, only on how well you did on what you turned in.
Your box has no symmetry, and your saucing of the chicken is not very even and so heavy it pools on each other.
Because you chose not to use garnish the inside of your box is quite messy and visible sauce smears.
With 6 being average, I'm scoring this a 5.

Score 6. How am I expected to judge this chicken. I CAN'T SEE IT. WAY, WAY, WAY, OVERSAUCED!!! The lack of balance (empty space in lower corner) and the additional sauce in the bottom of the box also distracts from the entry. This box presents a good case for the use of garnish which would hide all of the "extras" in the bottom of this box.

keep chicken on grill to glaze the meat. Got too much sauce on these
Needs to be more symetrical\

Lots of things that I'm not crazy about looking at this box, but it isn't about what I like, it is about how it appears "as presented". Basically, the chicken looks pretty dadgum good! Too much sauce, missing one piece to be "centered", too much difference between pieces, etc., but these are "my" preferences.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
