Take a little more time in your presentation. Otherwise, pieces seem uniform...maybe a little too much sauce. Score=8.

9 - Not usually a fan of cupcake chicken, and the overall appearance is a little sloppy. If you look past those imperfections, the meat itself looks outstanding.

Overall color is great. Shape, well, that needs a lot of work. Alignment probably could of been improved by using the piece behind each piece to lift the back up on each one, and could have make the vertical lines straight.

7 Awkward presentation, heavy on the sauce, but color is okay and these look tasty.

7 - while we don't score on garnish, that parsley looks like it just fell in the box, I would have rather seen no garnish than something that haphazard. Would also like to see pieces arranged more symmetrically, the only thin that bumped this up to a 7 is that the meat looks really plump and juicy.

Sauce is uneven and pieces look like there just thrown in the box. I'd give this box a 6.

Big chicken balls. All the trouble they went though making the balls they should have made them to fit the box. Good color. Lightly sauced. Dirty box. Poor arrangement in a sloppy made box.....6

7 uneven muffin pan pieces haphazardly placed skin appears to have shrunk on some pieces. Could have been a sting 8 if some attention had been taken in box placement. Almost looks like box slipped and was almost dropped and every thing slot to one side

8 - Nice looking yardbird. Line up those pieces and tidy the garnish & you've got an easy 9.

not very appealing to the eye, molded and looks like they were too big for that

Score 6. This entry is a mess! If it wasn't shown under the chicken heading I would have to wonder what I was judging. It looks more like meat balls than chicken. The pieces couldn't even be placed into the box with any appeal. The meat (?) is heavly coated in sauce.

6. Not sure how to judge this one. I'm anxious to try this as it looks different than any chicken I've seen before. Can't tell if the dark bits are all char, i'll assume they are. Sauce looks a little heavy and it looks like the box may have ben dropped or shaken.

Score: 7 - Chicken color is okay, too much sauce for my taste, placement in the box is off, trim is different but uniform.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only. SUGGESTIONS: Feel free to offer any suggestions on how to improve the box (keep separate from reasons why you scored the box). You can mention anything here such as garnish suggestions. Purpose
The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE. In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example). Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner. Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad. Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-) Archives by Month
