7 Uneven and heavy on the sauce,

George

8 - Sauce uneven

I really like this box and give the cook credit for trying something different. May be too much sauce but I would love to sample this entry. 9

9 Beautiful box with breast and thigh. Can't wait to taste!

JohnnyY - CBJ/NCBS

7 - Pieces are not uniform and are over sauced. The center addition of the sliced pieces does nothing to enhance the appearance of the box

Score 9 - Not afraid to mix white and dark.

a different approach, but very appealing 9

Looks good

Wow, nice, different look. Thanks.
Sauce is overly glopped on, clean up your glazing and your 8 easily becomes a 9.

score=9 looks delicious

8 better variety with breast meat, but tried to cram those pieces in the better. very curious how tender white meat was.

8 sauce heavy and inconsistent. i like the addition of the slices although may be a risk of dry pieces in box. size looks good but skin color and char are hidden by the sauce.

7-8 - Sauce is too thick on a couple of the pieces and I admittedly was a little surprised to see what I presume is breast meat medallions in the center. Overall, an okay presentation but it could be better.

Frank MCBJ

8. - Sauce is too thick and uneven. The breasts ate interesting but I would have used another breast or two to keep the sizes of the slices similar. A bit of a risk here offering two cuts if the breasts and thighs are not equal in quality. I do like a well cooked breast!

Paul KCBS/CBJ

8 - sauce uneven, may be the picture, could be a 9 easily.

8 - nice box, not flawless, but nice. Sauce is a bit gloppy in places & the two front pieces of sliced breast appear to have been stuffed into the box...kind of like putting a size 10 foot into a size 9 shoe, it fits but it doesn't feel good and in this case, the box suffers a bit.

seven--box needs 'finishing'--right now is sloppy

Sauce is too thick and very uneven. That is not appetizing. I'd give this box a 7.

A 9! interesting layout. Good spacing. Good even color and size on thighs. Look moist. Yummy.

Mike Cannon

7 - breast not appetizing - rest too wet.

nice display but the sauce is a little heavy and uneven 8

Interesting box.The thighs have good color. the breast meat looks pale and dry. Way over sauced.......7

7 I liked seeing both white and dark meat in the box. Tne sauce was not applied consistently. Some has the sauce "slathered" on while others look like it was just lightly brushed on. I like the pieces with less sauce better.

Sauce is definitely uneven and gloopy. Still looks a bit appetizing to me. I like that it looks like chicken, AND that there are two types of chicken in the box.

A little different, could have been a 9 but to much sauce,8

John Boyajian

Score: 8; Interesting presentation - like both white and dark meat, although this may be a risk of white being dry. Used too much sauce (notice lower right piece where you can see finger print of how it was placed in box).

Score 7. When will the cooks realize that we judge meat and NOT BBQ sauce. It is very hard to give a fair score when the meat is covered up in a sauce. When I see an entry coated heavy in sauce (like this one) I have to wonder what is wrong with the meat they are trying to cover up?

9 - Looks great. I liked the extra pieces in the center. Great touch.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
