9 no problems with this box, chicken looks great!

Good looking box. The upper left thigh takes away a bit, maybe rotate 180? 8

Bob

Score 8 - very good looking box. I'll bet the taste and texture scores are at least an 8 too. Needs something to put the appearance above every other nice box.

8 - The chicken looks great; nice color; not too much sauce. But the placement is a little sloppy and is the only discriminator.

Different size pieces. Shrunken skin. Brush marks. Not much care in making presentation..................6

Frank MCBJ

5. Edges look dark and dry. Thick sauce is unevenly applied. Overall, a below average looking chicken box. Suggestion: try to keep the thigh sizes more similar to one another.

7, uneven color, not even size

7 - In general I like the looks of this box, but, for me the score shrinks in proportion to the skin covering the thighs in this case. Some judges may opine that the meat looks overdone, perhaps it is, but I'll judge that as part of tenderness evaluation.

7
try to get the skin more uniform, plus the skin looks rubbery

Paul KCBC/CBJ

6 - Looks burnt, skin over sauced/trimmed poorly.

Lorne Rae

a 7. Good arrangement and look moist. Pieces are of different size as is the skin covering.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Chicken looks dark and over cooked. The skin is also pulling up from some pieces. Not very appetizing. I'd give this box a 5, below averarge.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS

It looks to me like the skin and the chicken are over cooked. Sloppy sauce only makes it look worse. 6, possibly a 7 in person.

8 Good look, can't judge this without tasting.

sjohnston

5-many issues. Appears dry/overdone where skin is not covering. Heavy, streaky sauce. Pieces very different in size which happens with real chicken, however different placement may have helped

Dick/MCBJ-CTC
1/6/2013 12:20:47 pm

Score 7. I believe this chicken will score high in the taste and tenderness catagorys, but for appearence it looks like the skin was removed, coated heavy with sauce and then replaced on the chicken. Too heavy and too dark !

Ed KCBS MCBJ
1/6/2013 12:42:10 pm

Skin is all shrunk up and I'm betting it's pretty rubbery. Not a very good look. The right 3 are considerably bigger than the left 3.
Chicken is sitting a little low in the box.
All in all pretty average 6.

You might want to throw some more greens in there to make the "frame" for your entry.

6, to dark, skin looks over cooked..pieces not the same sizes

Larry MCBJ

6 - That skin-only sauce along with the brushstrokes and uneven placement makes me not want to taste.

Random size pieces takes away from overall appearance.

chicken does look moist 7

score=9 looks good enough to try right now

JohnnyY CBJ/NCBS

7 - pieces are not uniform and do not look inviting.

Tom - CBJ w/ KCBS, MBN, NCPC & comp cook

WOW, what a quandary for me, as I usually score entries by how appetizing the meat looks (and I must admit that it does look rather appetizing to me); HOWEVER, while the meat looks pretty dadgum good there are so many problems with this box that I've just got to judge down.
Good thing - it looks like chicken!
Bad things - skin doesn't fit the pieces, pieces are too dissimilar in size, sauce is uneven, and there was obviously NO trimming done to the pieces prior to cooking.
From judging experience, I'd have to give this box a 5, even though the appetizing factor for me would be about a 7.

I would like to see the pieces more uniform in size

Mercy KCBS/CBJ

I like the darkened color, but I'm learning that judges grade down for that. 8

Score: 7; uneven skin size, uneven color, burnt around edges

Greg - cbjkcbs

7 they look great but the arrangement is a little strange. What about arranging them with the large ones in the back and the small ones in the front. Also the skin looks a little odd being that dark and the rest of the chicken looks lighter?

Henry CBJ KCBS

6 the appeal is not there, dry overcooked

rod

7,the skins coming off on some pieces.

Gerard
1/7/2013 06:43:21 pm

6 The pieces aren't equal in size. Especially the piece in the left upper corner. Try cut them exactly the same. Cover the thighs completely in the skin or remove the skin. The sauce only seems to be on the skin.

Shawn

I would give this a 7. Chicken looks dark and there is some sauce on the right side of the box.

Bill C.
1/9/2013 01:58:47 pm

8. Placement in the box and appearance of the skin needs improving.

jaja01

7 The chicken has uneven color. Also, the skin on the thighs is not of consistent size.

Dwain
1/10/2013 04:04:47 am

7. Looks like good BBQ though there are three small pieces and three larger ones. I recommend uniformity.

BorisDogge KCBS CBJ
1/11/2013 11:30:07 am

A very interesting looking box to say the least. I'd rather see a more uniform look to each piece of chicken - 7.

Scott A. KCBS/CBJ

Sorry, but a 6 and that's a really low score for me
Big time skin pullback, brushstrokes and appears overdone

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
