A little size difference in the pieces but otherwise chicken looks good. Some might think the pieces look dry but I like to judge the meat, not the sauce. 9

score=8 not real appealing

7 Looks burned and dry. Would be a lower score, but am giving benefit of the doubt because of photo quality.

I would like to see the pieces trimmed to a more uniform size

8 char varies between pieces but otherwise looks good.

6. Looks dry and over cooked in places. Try to get a more even coloring on the skin.

Score 7: Burnt/uneven skin, irregular size pieces. Like that it does not appear to be swimming in sauce.

8 - The color is not consistent but that is what happens when meat is cooked. I like this box.

Color looks great! Chicken could have been trimmed a little neater. I would give it an 8.

Good color and sauce. Different size pieces and shrunkened skin takes away a point.....................8

7 Uneven look, off color, appears dry but difficult to know.

7 - Average looking box chicken looks too dark.

overall presentation is nice, although it does look a little burnt and dry 7

8 - nice looking chicken...not a lot of sauce. Only critique is skin is shrinking to expose meat below. IMHO, thighs with skin look better with full covering skin.

Uneven color, maybe scorched? 7

Bob

Score 8 - The meat looks fully cooked and carefully presented.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Some piece look burnt and have the skin pulling up. Nothing special here. I would probably give this a 6 maybe a 7.

Scott - KCBS CBJ

8 - looks tasty, evenly sized, and nicely placed in the garnish. Color is a little uneven.

seven---uneven color, uneven sizes

Looks like chicken, but appears dry, skin not fully covering meat, uneven coloration and saucing.

Larry MCBJ

7 - Not fancy, but still looks like old school chicken. Reminds me of the old days on my Weber Kettle. Damn, maybe an 8 in person.......

Bill C. MCBJ/CTC KCBS

7. Pieces are not uniform in size and skin not uniform in color and coverage.

JohnnyY CBJ/NCBS
1/16/2013 11:54:59 am

7 - Pieces are not uniform; horizontally placing the items rather than vertically might look better

Paul (KCBS CBJ & Cook)

9 - even though the green is not perfectly balanced I don't detract from the fact that the chicken is a heckuva nice color. Looks real and great.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

8 - Nice color, not too much sauce, but more care should given to placement.

Matt KCBS CBJ
1/17/2013 01:09:03 am

7 - Above average box. Some looks a little dry and over done. Not uniform in shape or size. Those look like some big thighs, though!

Ed KCBS MCBJ
1/17/2013 01:29:58 am

Wow, them there is some big 'ol pieces of chicken! Splotchy color is a little dark here and there. Probably would have good flavor though. Biggest problem besides untrimmed look is the skin.
It's my experience that flap of rubbery, shrunk up, steaming hot epideral matter is going to come off with my first bite and hit me right in the chin. I'm afraid, very afraid.
I think this entry is very average thus the score of 6.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Herb, if you would indulge my soap box moment. If not just delete no hard feelings.

First off this has really nothing to do with this chicken box, it's just a place to put it.

I have for awhile now been amazed at some of the scoring thoughts versus final scores from some of our esteemed BBQ judges here. I have on occasion read some of your box critiques that were pretty harsh and justifyingly true yet there was no hesitation handing out a score of 8 or 9.
If you cite a lack of perfection how can you still give out a 9? If there are glaring problems that make you point them out how can it still be an 8?

There is mention made from time to time about the "7,8,9" judges who wouldn't give a 5 or 6 to save their souls. My intention here is not to incite anyone to lower their scores just because. I'm merely suggesting boxes with problems are not "excellent".

I would like to propose a little exercise for all of us that when giving a score to these boxes that you also write out the KCBS descriptive word that is associated to the number score.
If you judge a box and find fault with it and decide it's a 9 and can also give it the name "excellent" then do so, but if the term "very good" or "average" is more in line with what is in that box maybe you should adjust the number to match the description.
The descriptive words and matching number scores are available further down this page on the right hand side.

My only goal here is to cause some thought on the matter and make scoring more consistent among us judges.

Wish I could score this higher. Skin pullback and inconsistent color leave this box lacking. A couple pieces do look very good. I like that it is not oversauced.

I LOVE that this looks like REAL chicken! Nice color and not over-sauced. Good job.

7 not a very appealing looking box. try trimming the thighs more uniformly. that chicken doesn't make think I can't wait to taste this chicken

8. The chicken looks good. Some pieces are darker than others and some are shaped differently.

All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
