Please ignore the foil and pretend it is a legal garnish. Thanks!

Format to follow for judging:

SCORE: Here you type your score and reasons for your score

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Here you can bring up items that did not affect your score, but will help the cook improve his or her box and any other comments that did not affect your score.

Thanks for following this format, judges! :-)

I would give this chicken a 7. The color and amount of sauce looks great! It also looks moist. My suggestion would be to trim your chicken into more uniform pieces and make sure you wipe off the sauce drips that are on the inside edges of the box.

Score this box a 7, possibly an 8 in person. The picture quality makes the top 2 pieces look smaller. Otherwise the chicken looks good and isn't over-sauced.
Evidently not a KCBS sanctioned contest (foil). A little nicer spacing might help the score.

Score 6
Suggestions and comments, the pieces are very uneven in color and the bottom right piece looks as if someone took a bite. Even though I am sure that probably not the case that piece should have been placed where's it could not be see . Also suggest that that 3 more pieces be placed in the box to fill it and camaoge the flaws.

8 the one odd sized piece in the left corner took it down some, along with the smaller pieces on the right. sauce doesn't seem to be consistently applied.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score: 7 (Above Average) Inconsistent size of pieces, dark color and a bit too much sauce did in this entry for appearance.

Suggestions: I'm not a huge fan of the contrived shape of "cupcake chicken", but if you're going to go that route, at least be careful to keep the size of pieces consistent. Also be cautious when applying the sauce- this is one of those "less is more" situations. This photo isn't enhancing the product (shadows & really poor lighting), so that may be making it look darker than it actually is, but we have to judge what is put in front of us.

8 - color inconsistent - I assume the sauce on the foil is unavoidable and should not be considered.

john kcbs

Score: 8 - Looked good, sauce appears to be uneven.

Frank KCBS MCBJ

7. Looks a bit dry and could be higher in person - may be the picture - the right side of the box is in the shadows and looks darker than the left. Suggestion - clean up the sauce on the box before your turn in (I suspect you did after the picture was taken). Judges - there are KCBS contests where foil is legal as a garnish. For example, under the Competitor Series (see King of the Smoker) the organizer can establish foil as the only garnish allowed. Of course Herb already mentioned that we can ignore the foil on this entry.

Kind of hard to judge a box ignoring the foil! Chicken looks over cooked. I give it a 5

Jim S. KCBS CBJ

Appearance Score: 8
Nice lookinng Chicken. Good color. The two peices in the back are noticably different than the ones towards the front, this prevented a better score.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS

score=8 the meat looks tasty but are uneven.
I don't make boxes but maybe a different arrangement or cook more than you need and select the best for judging

Bill F.

7 Uneven appearance and color, however sauce is just right and this one might come out high in taste.

Suggestion: ditch the foil.

6....Average looking box. Good Color. Chicken looks dry. Different size pieces. Back, left piece looks out of place. No pop to the box.

Get the pieces close to the same size. Put a shine on your sauce. Clean the sauce off the box and foil. Make the foil look neater.

7 - This box appears dry and unappealing.

Suggestions: use a finishing glaze. Clean sauce spots off sides of box.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
2/1/2013 03:03:04 am

Sauce on chicken is a bit gloppy and dark (burnt?) in areas.
Difference in size is very noticeable. Sauce on the inside of box is avoidable, shows carelessness.
Best I got for ya is average 6.

Sugg.
I really hate the "foil" look, the pieces slide all over and you could trim the foil size so it isn't wadded up in front and back. You might try a little sauce under each chicken piece to hold it in place and walk very careful to turn in table

KCBS? Forign Object in the box, Al Foil.

Paul KCBS/CBJ

6 - Uneven color, size, and shape. Looks dry.
Drips of sauce on the box and foil should be avoided, clean boxes show attention to detail.

Karen, KCBS CBJ

SCORE: 7 The pieces are not equal size and the sauce is uneven. Looks like it might taste good though!

SUGGESTIONS: A little trimming should correct the size problem then just make sure the sauce is evenly covering each piece.

Rich M CBJ/KCBS

Score = 5 They look overdone & not cooked evenly. Not sure if the
picture makes them look darker than they are??

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
2/1/2013 08:10:05 am

Score = 7, sauce and color is uneven.

Suggestions: I think the light in this photo really affects how the chicken looks. Better lighting might give better scores.

Larry KCBS/CBJ - GBA/MCBJ

7- Haphazard arrangement and spacing just kills the score. I can't tell what the upper left piece is. Is that a big goober in the upper left corner between the box and foil? However, very nice color on some of the chicken and it doesn't appear oversauced.

Suggestion: Study the boxes on here and listen to the feedback. I'll guarantee your scores will increase.

greg Blume

I see the comment on ignore the foil. I'll give it a 7. I like the color. A cook will do cup cake pan chicken so they all look the same for a great appearance, I just don't see it in this presentation.

Greg cbjkcbs

5 I don't think foil is a garnish

Try using some lettuce or parsley to put under the chicken.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
2/2/2013 06:12:22 am

Score: 7-8. Sauce is a little gloppy and uneven. The piece in the back on the left is misshapen and looks out place.

Suggestions: Be careful to select pieces that are appealing and compliment the overall impression. Watch how much sauce you put on the meat; ensure it is evenly applied so it doesn't distract from nice-looking chicken.

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ

8 skin looks a little dry but nice size

Bill C. - KCBS MCBJ/CTC
2/2/2013 07:18:51 am

9. Meat looks moist

Suggestion: Spacing needs improvement. Foil would not be OK in KCBS contests.

Kev B / KCBS CBJ
2/2/2013 10:01:54 am

SCORE: 8. Chicken looks good except for 2 pieces not matching the rest.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Finally checking that is not over sauced. They itself deserves high points. Only took off because the piece in the back left looks weird and does not match the others.

Matt KCBS CBJ

8 - Chicken looks very good. I would suggest dipping in the sauce instead of brushing it on to give it a more even appearance. Other than that, nice job!

TerryA

7 - the pieces do not look appealing. The sizes are not uniform and they look dry. Maybe they look better in person, but the picture does not do them justice.

D Q, if KCBS - No tin in box.

JohnnyY CBJ/NCBS

7 - I would have like to have seen a picture of the box from a slightly overhead view. I cannot see what all the pieces look like from the angle pictured.

6
Average chicken. Poor photograph or score could have been higher.
Black parts do not appear appetizing to me. Looks dry, pieces too dissimilar, don't have that "it's CHICKEN" appearance (round balls of skin covered something!).

Dwain - CBJ/KCBS
2/8/2013 04:45:50 am

Score: 7 - above average.

Comment: It may be a shadow and in person would not have this issue but the pieces on the left look darker than the pieces on the right which indicate different levels of doneness. Pieces on the left also look smaller than the pieces on the right.

Suggestion: When selecting pieces to present ensure the pieces are uniform in size and color. I also recommend wiping the box prior to submission.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
