Looks yummy score 8

8 looks pretty good but one piece appears to be smaller in picture
-
Piece selection needs to be better.

Score this chicken a 9. I like the way the sauce has been somewhat carmelized and is not sloppy. You might use more lettuce in the box to bring the meat up higher for appearance.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 7 : Color is uneven, some pieces look a little burnt even. Skin is pulling up on some pieces. Sauce is uneven as well.

Suggestions: You don't have to go all out to make all the pieces the same size and shape, but some trimming would help the symmetry. The more symmetrical things are the more pleasing to the eye they are.

Sully KCBS/CBJ

7 not a very appealing looking chicken box. uneven pieces
the lettuce is blocking two of the pieces looks like trying hide them

Bill F

7 Thighs somewhat uneven, sauce ok but bodering on too much.

Suggestion: Too much green stuff; the chicken is overwhelmed.

I would give this box a 7. The pieces could be trimmed more uniform and the sauce or parts of the chicken could be over cookedt.

7......Different size pieces. Looks over sauced. Good color and shine.

Lighten up on the lettuce. Either shorten the lettuce or put a bed of lettuce under the chicken to raise it out of the garnish....Better yet, use parsley.

Hate the shadow
8
From the pic can't see all pieces, so lean towards cook

Larry MCBJ
2/14/2013 12:57:33 pm

The chicken is hiding in the greens and isn't close to being trimmed to look similiar to the other pieces.

6 - from me, maybe a 7 in person.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS

score=7 nice color. could be better arranged and more uniform

Henry CBJ KCBS

Poor picture! Greens hiding the meat 8. Still looks good

Fred KCBS
2/15/2013 12:06:43 am

shadowing makes it difficult to judge, but I have to say this is a nice box 8

Frank KCBS MCBJ
2/15/2013 12:28:52 am

7 - Sauce looks a bit heavy. Char is very uneven amongst the pieces.

Suggestion: Garnish distracts from the meat as the meat sits low and the leaves are above the box. Your appearance will be improved if you focus on the meat.

Beautiful color, great job of glazing just enough!
Must say I'm not sure what these are, wing sections or very over trimmed thighs????
At any rate they look like they'll eat just fine..
I score above average 7.

Sugg.
I'm not mentioning garnish anymore, but if I were to, I would say that your garnish is overpowering the entry and your chicken is buried and the greens are hiding the meat.
Just not saying.......

Score: 8 - Color is very good, can't see the whole piece so not sure about the trim job, a couple of the pieces look smaller, placement, while mostly uniform, is a little off. Overall, nice looking box, just needs some tweaking to gain that 9 score for me.

Looks like chicken, but pieces could be more similar in size and shape, uneven coloration and saucing, and NEVER hide the meat under the garnish!!! We aren't judging garnish, but we are judging meat, so make it easy for the judges to see the meat!

Tom KCBS MCBJ

Ununiform pieces, skin cut too short, glopey sauce 6

Matt Walsh
2/16/2013 11:12:22 am

6 - Average. Not evenly trimmed and over sauced.

Less sauce, trim more evenly, and place in the box a little more carefully. A couple pieces look a touch over done.

Rich M CBJ/KCBS

Score = 8 Looks great except lacks uniformity.

Suggestion: Try to use pieces that are closer in size and shape.

I'd give it an 8 or 9 I'd need to see it in person to be sure. Looks pretty good to me.

Paul KCBS/CBJ

8 - Visible brush marks, uneven color.

Box might present better if the chicken sat up instead of sitting down below the level of the lettuce.

8 - overall looks good. The sizes need to be more consistent. The upper right thigh looks smaller than the other pieces. Like the color of the chicken which is not covered by the glazing.

Suggest - choose the chicken pieces to me more consistent.

Glenn KCBS CBJ
2/18/2013 09:25:59 am

7 - the chicken is swamped by the garnish. Size of the samples are not uniform. Color and amount of sauce look fine.

7 (possibly an 8)

I dont think the lighting in this is helping at all; it's emphasizing the dark, light, and sauce...

Nice leafy green in here, but that I'm mentioning this is also a slight problem. It's preventing me from basking in the glow that is the wonderful chicken you've presented. Back off slightly, IMHO, lets not have it get in the way...

Sauce a little heavy and seeming gloppy, but again this is being over-emphasized by the lighting; seeing it first hand would probably bring the score up to an 8.

I see a turn in box of BBQ Chicken, nothing there get's me to take more notice than that. Sorry.

A bit to sauced, scorched a couple of pieces and dare I mention that the "G" conceals some of the meat.

Dwain -- CBJ/KCBS
2/22/2013 01:13:02 pm

SCORE/REASONS: 7 - 2 left hand pieces seemed to be darker (cooked more) than the other 4 pieces. 3 pieces in the back row look smaller than the 3 pieces in the front row. I recommend uniformity throughout. I'd like to sample this above average entry.

Rod

7 maybe an 8 in person, sauce is kinda uneven and the pieces could be a little more concentric.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
