Looks great 9

Paul KCBS/CBJ

9 - Very nice presentation showcases the product.

Comments: Sauce may be a little thick, need even color for each piece. Picture is tough to tell would like to see in person.

9 nicely sized entries, nice color
Apprecite the amount of green, less is more

9 looks perfect to me! almost too perfect!

Nice looking bux thugh 1 piece of chicken looks alo smaller than rest 8

Eggspert, KCBS CBJ
3/9/2013 12:06:58 am

Score: 7-8
Comments: Work on sizing and shape of your chicken (top right thigh) to be more consistent. Also, the sauce looks a little gloopy.

Excellent appearance and looks extremely appetizing to me too!

eight--piece in upper right seems alot smaller

Frank KCBS MCBJ
3/9/2013 01:30:37 am

8 - Would be a 9 if the color were more even among the pieces. May be a 9 in person.

Suggestion: Some judges will mark down for uneven sizes. Try to keep the sizes uniform and you will score higher with those judges. I would take the picture from the Judges' perspective rather than from the side.

7. They look moist and are well arranged but the two on the back row right are smaller and darker than the other four.

Bill F

8 Nice color, sauce about right, the upper right corner smaller piece throws it off a bit.

9 - nice looking chicken. Saucey, but not too saucey.

Please take photo from judges' point of view.

Give this box of chicken a 9. The pieces are even, good placement and borderline sauce. Good job!

7.......Different size pieces. Uneven goopy sauce. The top right piece is really distracting.

Apply the sauce evenly. Take time and choose pieces close to the same size.

score=9
maybe if you'd have cooked a few more you might have had one that could take the place of the little one, but I wasn't there.

9. Beautiful looking chicken. Can't wait to sample.

I give this box a 9. Uniform size, Looks juicy. I want to take a bite.

Tina Cannon KCBS CBJ

8 due to unmatched size , color looks good as well as a nice gloss. Even those garnish is not to effect the score it does look nice and makes the chicken show nicely

Johnny Young
3/9/2013 01:49:51 pm

9 - I am not sure if it is the camera angle that is causing the piece in the upper right hand corner to look small than the rest however it is a nice box.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 7, Sauce and color is uneven. These are above average, but I can't say that they are very good.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
3/10/2013 04:48:12 am

Please show the box as it would be in a contest, if I was looking from the front I maybe would not have noticed how different the back pieces were in size.
I'll go above average 7.

Kendall - CBJ
3/10/2013 12:44:14 pm

Looks almost perfect, but I'd give it an 8 because all of the samples don't look to be the same size.

mike cannon
3/10/2013 01:02:07 pm

8 - looks good - not a fan of the artificial rolled pieces.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
3/10/2013 03:55:38 pm

Score/Reasons: 9/Good color, not too much sauce; makes me want to at least try it.

Suggestions/Comments: The piece in the center on top is not uniformly shaped, and the piece in the upper right corner appears to be smaller than the others on the top row.

David

8, looks good.

Good looking box

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ
3/11/2013 02:43:51 am

9 - the color looks good. The meat shows just enough caramelization. Looks good.

Suggestion - might be the pic, but the pieces of meat do not appear to be consistent is size.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ
3/11/2013 02:49:40 am

8 - the exposed bone(s) on the left detracts from the box. The eye is drawn to the bones.

Suggestion - if the majority of the ribs do not have exposed bones then don't put one or two ribs with exposed bones in the box.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ
3/11/2013 02:51:57 am

6 - the bright red color is not appetizing. It is not a natural color.

Suggestion - keep the appearance of the meat natural looking. Forget the bright red color. Un-natural.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ
3/11/2013 02:55:48 am

8 - the meat looks ok. Brisket is hard to present to get a WOW Factor.

Suggestion - it seem brisket is always presented lined up like this. Try to figure out a different way to present it to make it stand out from the other presentations.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ
3/11/2013 06:14:58 am

I would score this box an 8. They only reason for not scoring a 9 would be the piece of chicken on the top right not being as uniform as the other pieces.

Matt KCBS CBJ
3/12/2013 05:30:41 am

SCORE/REASONS: 7 - Above average chicken. Some thighs are smaller than others; sauce is a little thick in a few places.

Terry A
3/17/2013 01:48:36 am

9 - the only comment would be that the piece in the upper right hand corner is a little smaller than the rest but that DOES NOT hurt this box one bit. The cook took his/her time making sure they were very similar and look great.

FP-CBJ
3/26/2013 06:53:35 am

Score: 8

Work on uniformity of shape/size/color. Overall its a nice looking product.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
