They sure do look natural and like they are right off the grill, and I'm sure they probably taste pretty good, but for competition chicken they look below average to me. Uneven saucing and uneven charring (okay - CHARRING in general!), took DEEP hits from me on these thighs. Top two thighs look a bit dry also.

7--looks like nines for t/t

8 char not consistent on each piece. Some are charred and some aren't.

Score: 9 - I anticipate there will be a few who call this box out for boogers or burned spots and some may even decry the lack of uniformity in the trimming. I see none of this as a problem. They look natural to me and where others see issues I see flavor.

Suggestions: None.

Chicken looks moist and tender. Although we are not supposed to judge on garnish, the box looks a little bare 7

Johnny Y

8 - Pieces would have gotten a higher score if sauce was applied evenly. Three more pieces would have made the box look full and enhanced the presentation

I don't mind a little char and it does look tasty
Suggestion:Try to get more even color. This will probably get some 7s

7-8
Instead of showing the bones, you might could have improved your appearance by placing the pieces horizonally in the box

8 Good potential, but uneven coloring and possibly some burning on the skin.

7......A little above average box.

Front right piece is undersized and lacking sauce on the bottom part. Sauce over charred. Size the chicken better. Dip the pieces to get it all the way around the meat and a little more attention with the finishing glaze.

Score = 7: Sauce and color on these looks uneven.

Matt KCBS CBJ

7 - Above average.

Chicken looks a tad dry or over cooked. Sauce is a little on the blotchy side, too.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS

I would love to try this chicken. Love how the sauce and skin have a crunchy look. Score this box a 9.

Greg - cbjkcbs

8 - Like the arrangement but a little more garnish would not hurt at all. The container looks a little empty. Pieces look good with all portions being equal

Don

score 7, looks unevenly cooked

Lorne Rae

7. The lumpy glaze takes away a lot of eye appeal even though the spacing, sizing, and arrangement is good.

Eggspert, CBJ

Score: 7
Comments: This looks like chicken I would like to eat in my backyard. It really looks tasty, but you have to work on fine tuning details such as uniformity (size, shape, and sauce). Build your chicken up in the box too that will help with the wow factor. It looks like you can cook, now you have to make it look pretty.

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ

6 scorched here and there
not that attractive

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
3/27/2013 09:27:52 am

8 - char and coloring too uneven but a good looking piece of chicken.

Shawn Surber-KCBS CBJ
3/27/2013 11:34:31 am

I would give this box a 6. The chicken is not uniform in shape, the sauce looks a little to dark, and it looks like the meat has a dry look to it.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS
3/27/2013 02:18:16 pm

score=7
could be an 8 with a little better arrangement or uniform pieces.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MABA Judge

7 - meat is inconsistently trimmed...each piece is a different shape...some are triangular, some are rectangular & some are oval-ish. This makes for a disorganized & rather jumbled appearance. Colorwise, pieces have a splotchy appearance. Suggest a finishing glaze be applied...it'll mute the splotchiness and brighten the fininshed product.

Bob-CBJ/KCBS

score 7 , pieces are all different sizes and the color isn't even

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
3/27/2013 02:57:04 pm

Score 8. I believe this will be excellent tasting chicken, but due to the uneven, blotchy, dark coating the best score I can give it is an eight.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

8/Not too much sauce; looks appetizing!

Pieces are not well-matched, giving the impression the cook just "threw" them in the box; try to match the pieces better.

Dwain

6 - Average

Some of the edges have a darker appearance than the main body of the meat (burnt edges?). Also, the sauce looks clumped/thicker in some places than others.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Yum, dark and crusty with a firm set sauce. Looks like chicken.
I really like the look of this entry. I bet it is very flavourfull.
I'm in for a excellent 9.
I went back and took a relook and I think it could be a little dry,and now think it to be a very good 8. However in a contest there would be no relook, so the 9 stands.

Rod

7 looks dry and unevenly sauced to me.No wow factor.

Paul G KCBS/CBJ

7 - Poorly trimmed, uneven sauce, not pretty.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ

6 - the color is not uniform. I don't mind a little carmelization but several pieces look as it area are burnt. The color is not uniform. It appears the skin covers most pieces but the center piece on the right appears not to have the skin covering the complete piece.

Suggest - watch the carmelization process and to allow the pieces to get black. Also make sure the skin is the same on all meat, and the color is uniform.

Glenn - KCBS CBJ CTC

7 - Not a very pretty box as far as eveness of sauce and burnt marks. With that said they still look very tasty.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
