a sharper photograph would have helped, but appear over-sauced/glazed to me.

9 - evenly trimmed box of chicken. Looks very good.

8 sauce seems to be heavy but photo is slightly out of focus. Better picture c.f. would have helped assess.

That's about as bad a picture as ever posted hre but that appears to be some fine looking chicken

Score: 8 - This is some very good looking chicken (at least what we can see from the lo-rez pic).

Suggestions: This box gets a 9 with more uniform levels of doneness.

Chicken looks tender and moist, nice full box 9

8 - Picture quality could have been better and a better angle would allowed for better viewing. The pieces appeared to be a bit over sauced.

Good looking box!

9 Just about perfect from what I can see but the focus is off so I can't be sure.

8......Like size pieces. Good color.

The sauce is blochey and uneven. Put a little space between the rows to give a better view of the meat.

Score = 9: Photo is very blurry, so hard to get a good look at the chicken. From what I can see it looks great.

Matt KCBS CBJ
3/27/2013 08:47:12 am

8 - Very good. Despite the bluriness of the picture, the chicken looks uniform in shape and has a nice color. In person or if I could see it in more detail, I might give it a 9, but hard to say because it is so out of focus. Looks good to me, though.

- I can not give this a fair assessment. It is too pixelated and out of focus. Though you can tell the cook put a lot of effort into his finished product.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS

Nice looking box of chicken. Pieces look a little different but could be caused by the angle. Sauce is a little borderline but otherwise I'd still give this a 9.

Greg - cbjkcbs

8 - My only suggestion would be to spread them out instead of having the pieces next to each other. Equal sizes, color and amount of garnish looks great.

Eggspert, CBJ

Score: 7-8, picture is blurry difficult to tell
Comments: Solid chicken box, but no wow factor. Work on getting sizing more uniform and add maybe some seasoning to the top for some texture visually or a little glaze to get you to a 9 score.

9!! A very appealing box. Good sizing, color and spacing. Look moist.

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ

8 pic a little blurred could go higher in person, nicely sized

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

9. Poor resolution makes the picture too fuzzy. Benefit of the doubt here. May be lower in person. Seems to be well cooked and a nicely constructed box.

I would give this box a 9. Very nice job! Great color and a nice job trimming the meat. This box is hard to beat!

9 - very nice box appearance.

score=9
were they that close together in the muffin pan.

Bob- CBJ/KCBA

Score 9, nice color, pieces are even in size, nice looking box

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 8. This is not a good picture to judge from, but using what we are given everything appears to be nicely balanced. The reason I have deducted one point is due to the heavy sauce which is hiding the chicken. Lighten up the sauce and this entry would most likely score a nine.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

9/Nice color, nice symmetry, not too much sauce!

Be careful of the focus of the picture; out-of-focus pictures make it difficult to accurately judge the "little things."

9 - excellent

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Really crappy picture, I suspect it could be an excellent 9 but since I can't see it, you aint gettin it.
Very good 8.

8 possible 9 I need to see it in person to be sure.

9 - Very, Very nice looking even with the poor picture. Would like to see what your chicken looks like in person.

Glenn - KCBS CBJ CTC

8 - Not the best picture. Could easily be a 9 in person. Chicken look nice and moist. might be a little over sauced.

9 - I like the color and the little bit of carmelization. Looks good.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
