8 everything but the amount of sauce looks good. I think there is too much sauce.

8+ - a little too red for my tastes

8 The pieces are about as even in size as you could expect without being pan formed.

If it were mine I would expect a nine; however, the glaze doesn't look to be set enough.

9! Good layout, even color and sizes, look moist.

8 nice sizing
Could do without the G between pieces

Kendall CBJ

Too much sauce in my opinion. I'd give it an 8, or possibly a 7.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

8. Too much sauce.

Suggestion: Neaten up the garnish, the meat is tending to sink a little low.

9 - beautiful box, but be careful not to oversauce the meat...it's almost there.

There we go, now I have something to whine about, can I get a bucket of sudsy water and a bath towel?
Pretty layout, nice even sized pieces. Nice mahogany color of gloppy seriously heavy sauce. You have to realize all I'm gonna taste here is your sauce. And I'll let you know it on your taste score.
I'm giving a very good score of 8, but I'm a just as likely to make it an above average 7 also!

Good looking Chicken. Sauce looks very wet.
Maybe let the sauce set up for a bit longer.

8. Nice arrangement but it has too much sauce on it. It looks staged. Reduce the sauce after smoking and it would have been a better score.

Randy CBJ & CTC

This is rough for me. The samples look at tad over sauced, might taste more sauce than chicken. Like to see it in person for that. I have never been a fan of samples almost buried by parsley, I like to see the sides of the samples, makes me wonder what the cook is hiding. If over sauced in person '7'

Ike, KCBS/CBJ

Uniform pieces but way too much sauce......7, maybe an 8 in person.

Score: 9 - Excellent color, near perfect trim, very uniform placement and size, glaze is mouth watering, very appealing box. Excellent job.

This box is packaged in a uniform manner but in my opinion it has to much sauce. So much sauce that I cannot see the quality of the cooking. It has enough pieces and placed nicely but it seems to be drenched in sauce.

Pros: uniformity, looks juicy, overall a nice looking box
Con: a little too dark for me

Score it a 9!! Great looking box. I am of old school, that if the box is appealing, why score it down on appearance. These look a "little" over sauced, but would love to taste and see if I taste chicken or sauce. Would be great if sauce is crystallized. If sauce over powers meat taste I would score it down a little in other scores.

9 - excellent

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8 - Sauce too heavy and uneven. Meat is nestled down and can't be seen as well.

Comments: With heavy sauce and meat nestled down like that the parsley will stick to the pieces like glue. Most judges hate this as they have to spend time picking the parsley off the piece of chicken. Garnish doesn't affect the score, but it can be a pain in the butt.

9 - This presentation is neatly arranged, however do not let the greenery over power the pieces ( i.e. do not the parsley cover the pieces), it give the illusion that something is being hidden.

8......Good color. Like size pieces.Nice sheen.

Appears over sauced. Line up the pieces on the front row. Remove the parsley that in the center so the judges can see the meat.

Looks pretty good, but appears to be nestled down into the garnish so that some of the meat is not visible. Would present better on top of garnish.
Oversauced.

8. I think maybe the cook got a bit carried away by the garnish. The meat is seriously socketed in there and the eye is drawn to the greenery first. Also, the pieces look really good but pretty heavy on the sauce. Pease remember the idea of the sauce is to enhance the flavor not create it

All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
