SCORE/REASONS: Here you type your score and reasons for your score

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: Here you can bring up items that did not affect your score, but will help the cook improve his or her box and any other comments that did not affect your score.

7, uneven color, really dark/black this usually indicates a Charred taste. Looks like a little heavy handed with the rub and it's unevenly coated, appears that the sugar in the rub turned dark.

Under KCBS rules I would ask the table captain to call the contest rep over for a ruling. This box contains an illegal foreign object (foil) and should be disqualified.

This box is not very appealing. Placement is bad and another row would have helped. The chicken looks more like meatballs. 6

8 - nice looking box of barbecued chicken. Little-to-no sauce is fine with me. At least judges will be able to taste the meat.

Score = 8: Score is based off KCBS, but this is not a KCBS entry and I'm not aware of MBN or other scoring systems. Color on the chicken is a little uneven.

Nice job of trimming your pieces. But they look overcooked and dry.
They well could be very tasty though with the nice crusty texture.
Placement in the box looks shoved to the back, must be why KCBS uses garnish huh?
Again it looks avearge, so here's your 6.

SCORE/REASONS: 9. The image is blurry so I will give benefit of the doubt and say this chicken looks mighty tasty -- as if the pitmaster actually decided to impart some smoke to the otherwise commonplace thighs -- something I heartily applaud.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: The 8s and 7s in here are going to include:

-non-uniform cuts during prep
-look dry
-look burned

And while they may have a point on the uniformity of pieces when going with thighs -- I think they look excellent and would not suggest any changes beyond that.

7 - and that was generous. Chicken pieces look good and are proportional but seem dry and uninviting. Add some kind of garnish and you would have received a better score.

5 - the thighs appear to be dry and the rub appears to be a little burnt. Also the pieces look puny in the box without green.

Suggestion - Presenting the meat without garnish is OK but if this is done, then the pieces of chicken need to be larger to fill up the box.

7.......All the thighs are the same size. Nice colored skin.

Looks very dry. A little sauce and shine would really pump up your score.

    Purpose

    The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

    The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

    In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

    Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

    Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
