8 too much sauce

8- crowded box. Just not screaming "eat me"

Ike, CBJ/KCBS

Pieces are a little uneven and way too much sauce. 7, possibly an 8 in person.

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ

9 big pieces

Doug KCBS Master CBJ & CTC

Score 8, Sauce is uneven and size of the pieces is different as well. They way the pieces are arranges emphasizes this difference. Laying them out largest to smallest would be more pleasing to the eye.

Score: 7
Comments: Over sauced and sauce is a little sloppy. Need to work on size/shape to get all pieces more uniform. Good color.

8. Too saucy.

7 - OK - like the glaze to have set.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MIM, MBN & MABA Judge

7 - 6 pieces = legal entry.

Suggestions: This box looks messy to me. The pieces need to be trimmed to the same size as the smallest piece...they don't need to be "cookie-cutter equally shaped," but equal sizes make for a nicer appearance and much more uniform cooking. Please lighten up on the much too heavy appearing sauce. Clean up the edges of the box or hide the sauce smears with garnish.

Appearance - 7. Sauce a little uneven. Sample size a little uneven.

7. Even up the color and a little less sauce gets this box closer to a 9.

score=8
full box of meat, problem with uniformity

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Really big pieces. Variation in size quite noticeable. The reason this matters is it shows the cooks ability and skill level in choosing, trimming, and cooking their product.
Pretty dang saucey and not very evenly applied.
If your styroform box is that messy when you hit the judges table it will cost you points in appearance score.
Keep at it, your process just needs some fine tuning.
This box is average, 6.

8 Sizes not even, color good, may be heavy on the sauce.

5....Can't find a positve for this box.

Way over sauced. Can't see the meat to judge. Sloppy sauce. Dirty box. Put a light glaze on the chicken with a shine. That would go a long way in improving your score

NOT perfect, but excellent to me! Middle piece on bottom is larger than others, but VERY appetizing so it gets a 9!

Don Ousley CBJ

Chicken not uniform, colors little different, sauce not equal on all sides.
Don't brush sauce, dip the chicken in sauce pan and restore to grill for few minutes to allow sauce to adhere

Doug Winter

7 too much sauce, chicken is a little sloppy in the box with uneven sizes. That said i do like that I can tell that it is thighs and not cupcake formed meat.

8 - great looking chicken but be more carefull when placing in the box. Some sauce on the side.

cbj/comp cook, 7 possible 8 in person, i can't stop looking at that 1 big piece in the front row, if it wer'nt for that this could possibly be a 9

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/ reason 7 pieces are uneven, a little over sauced,

7 Way too heavy on the sauce. I get the feeling we might have some tough skin here also.

Appearance Score; 7
The box looks overwhelming. Pre-trimming on the thighs could have gotten a more consistent size, thus a better appearance.

I know that this is a meat comp and you are not to take the "greenery" into consideration but.........., More DARK greenery would make the chicken "POP" and hid some of the little mistakes that are there.
Color of the chicken is good, but the sauce is a little thick in places.

Maybe place all the same size or very close to same size pieces together, the front middle seems to be large and most of the rest small.

9 - I like the look of the meat except for the about of glaze. I think there is too much glaze. I don't feel this would have me score this box an 8.

Suggestion - use less glaze.

Score: 8 - Nice color, arrangement is uniform, size of the pieces are slightly different and that throws off the symetry, a little too much sauce for my liking but overall a tempting looking box.

6 sauce looks not uniform and neither is the size

7 or 8 at best. The box is kinda sloppy with the sauce drops and smears. The cook tried to wipe up but you can still get the overall impression its sloppy. And wow is this oversauced! Cant see the chicken for the sauce.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
